St. Davids, Pa. (Apr. 5, 2022)- Alvernia University's (10-16-1, 3-2) four runs in the sixth inning were not enough as Eastern University (9-17, 2-3) took a 6-4 win Tuesday night in a MAC Commonwealth baseball matchup at Eastern.
Â
Zach Rogacki led off the contest with a bunt for a base hit. But, the Golden Wolves were unable to bring Rogacki home, stranding him on second after the next three batters were retired.
Â
The Eagles then opened the scoring in their half of the first with an RBI double to left.
Â
Both defenses showed out in the second inning, with both pitchers only facing three batters.
Â
While Alvernia was held to just two hits through five innings, the Eagles were able to build up their lead to 5-0 with runs crossing the plate in the third, fourth, and fifth innings.
Â
Despite the deficit, Alvernia responded in the top of the sixth.
Joe Ginder opened the inning with a single to third base. The Golden Wolves got another runner on base on the next at bat with
Nick Nutile getting hit by a pitch. With two on,
Mike Ramundo singled up the middle to drive in Ginder for Alvernia's first run of the game.
Jason Kelly then recorded a single up the middle to drive in Nutile to make it a 5-2 game. Alvernia then got within one, 5-4, with two runs scoring on an error during
Billy Dougar's at-bat.
Â
The Eagles then capitalized on two Alvernia misplays – an error and a wild pitch – to push their lead back to two, 6-4, in the bottom of the sixth.
Â
The Golden Wolves had a chance to even the contest up in the top of eighth, with the game-tying run in scoring position with two outs. But, Eastern forced a come-back grounder back to the pitcher for the third out to end the threat.
Â
Alvernia again stranded two in the top of the ninth as Eastern was able to take the 6-4 win.
Â
Both Rogacki and Kelly finished with two hits, and Kelly also recorded a run and an RBI.
Â
Matt Colucci got the start on the mound for Alvernia, striking out five in six innings of work.
Â
Alvernia returns to action Friday afternoon at Alvernia as the Golden Wolves look to split the series with the Eagles. Â
