Strong Fourth Lifts Alvernia Past Hood, 13-10

Frederick, Md. (April 9, 2022) - With the game locked at 8-8 entering the fourth quarter, Alvernia University (7-6, 1-3) outscored Hood College (4-8, 0-4) 5-2 in the final frame to come away with the 13-10 win over the Blazers on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth women's lacrosse action at Hood.

Alvernia trailed Hood 5-2 after the first quarter before starting to work its way back. Alvernia held Hood to just one goal in the second quarter to even it up at 6-6 going into the half, and the game stayed locked up through the third quarter until Alvernia pulled away in the fourth for the 13-10 win. It's Alvernia's first win over Hood since April 8, 2017.

The Blazers struck first after taking its opening possession to goal for the 1-0 lead after just over 30 seconds, but, four minutes later, a goal by Erika Whitmoyer evened it up at 1-1.

The Blazers then outscored Alvernia 4-1 the rest of the quarter, with Alvernia's only other goal again coming off of the stick of Whitmoyer.

Alvernia opened the scoring with back-to-back goals from Sherrin Smith and Haleigh Lackner to get within one, 5-4.

The Blazers went back up by two, 6-4, with a goal with ten minutes to go in the second. But, that would be their final goal of the quarter.

A free position goal from Olivia McCambly brought Alvernia within one, 6-5, and a free position by Lackner evened it up at 6-6 with just under a minute to play in the half.

The Golden Wolves and Blazers traded goals in the third quarter, with each side netting two. Both of Alvernia's goals came from McCambly, including a short-handed goal with 3:42 left in the third.

With the game locked at 8-8 with 15 minutes to go, Alvernia opened the fourth quarter with a goal from Lackner off the pass of Whitmoyer to go up 9-8, but Hood once again evened it up at 9-9 just two minutes later.

The Golden Wolves were able to string together two straight goals - one from Mackenzie McKinney and one from Lackner - to put some space between them and the Blazers, 11-9.

The Blazers got back within one, 11-10 with 6:28 to play, but Alvernia held Hood scoreless the rest of the way while adding on to its lead.

Lackner's fifth goal of the afternoon put Alvernia up 12-10, and Whitmoyer scored the final goal of the game with 2:31 to play for the 13-10 final.
