Harrisburg, Pa. (Sept. 1, 2022) - After trailing 1-0 late in the second half, Alvernia University (0-0-1) was able to convert an equalizing penalty kick in the 79th minute, but neither team could break through the rest of the way as Alvernia tied Penn State Harrisburg (0-0-1) in the men's soccer season-opener on Thursday evening at PSU Harrisburg.
The Lions and Golden Wolves played fairly even through the first half, with the Lions outshooting Alvernia 2-0 on shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes.
Penn State broke through in the 57th minute when Penn State's Kobe Harris found Ethan Cortes for the 1-0 lead.
Alvernia's Justin Fetrow nearly tied the game in the 68th minute, but his attempt went off the crossbar.
The Lions then committed a foul in the 79th minute, and Alvernia sent Nick Willson to the line with an opportunity to even it up. Willson converted and Alvernia evened it up at 1-1 with just over ten minutes to play in regulation.
Both teams had one more opportunity to even it up, but each goalie was able to make their respective saves to keep the game tied at 1-1. It would stay tied at 1-1 the rest of the way.
With new NCAA rules going into effect this season, there is no longer an overtime in soccer outside of postseason play. If the game is tied after 90 minutes of regulation play, the game will end in a tie.
Evan Solley made his debut in net for Alvernia, making four saves for the Golden Wolves.
The Golden Wolves return to action on Saturday at Penn State Berks.
