Reading, Pa. (Sept. 3, 2022) - Alvernia University (1-0-1) picked up its first win of the season with the Golden Wolves defeating Penn State Berks 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Penn State Berks.

The Golden Wolves and Lions traded scoring opportunities early - with two shots coming off the foot of Alvernia's Nate Stoltzfus, and Alvernia keeper Evan Solley keeping a header opportunity out of net.

In the 20th minute, Alvernia broke through when Evan Bauer took the rebound of a Matt Knowles shot that bounced off the crossbar, and buried it inside the left post to give Alvernia the 1-0 advantage.

The Golden Wolves held Penn State Berks to just one shot the remainder of the first half as Alvernia kept its 1-0 lead going into the second frame.

Alvernia had two shot opportunities in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Lions were able to keep it a 1-0 game.

It would stay a 1-0 game most of the half until Nick Denlinger gave Alvernia a last minute insurance goal. The goal came in similar fashion as Alvernia first, with Denlinger picking up the rebound of a Connor Kraycik shot in the 89th minute and hitting a quick kick in off the left post to secure a 2-0 win for the Golden Wolves. 

The Golden Wolves held Penn State Berks to just five shots on goal for the entire game, with Solley making all five saves to pick up the shutout win in net.

Alvernia returns to action on Thursday, September 8th with its home opener as the Golden Wolves host Lancaster Bible College at 7:00 PM.
