Montclair, NJ (Sept. 1, 2022) - A penalty kick by Montclair State's (1-0) Aileen Cahill was all the Red Hawks needed as Montclair State defeated Alvernia University (0-1) 1-0 in the season-opener of women's soccer on Thursday afternoon at Montclair State.

Cahill was awarded a penalty kick after Alvernia committed a foul in the box in the 73rd minute. Cahill went to the left corner of the goal to get by Alvernia keeper Brynn Bock. 

Neither side could break through in the first half of action, but Alvernia held the slight shot on goal advantage, 2-1, going into the second half.

Montclair State opened the second half with five shots in the opening 14 minutes of the half, but Alvernia was able to keep the Red Hawks off the board.

Alvernia struggled to get a shot on net in the second half while Montclair State took the 1-0 lead in the 73rd minute. The Golden Wolves had just one shot after the successful penalty kick by the Red Hawks, but the shot went over the goal as Montclair State took the 1-0 win. 

Bock finished the afternoon with seven saves in net.

Alvernia returns to action on Monday night with a 7:00 PM matchup against King's College at Alvernia.
