Alvernia Plays to 1-1 Draw Against King's

Golden Wolves Score on a Fontana Goal, Bock Makes 10 Saves in Net

Reading, Pa. (Sept. 5, 2022) - Alvernia University (0-1-1) and King's College (2-0-1) each scored a goal a half to play to a 1-1 draw on Monday night in non-conference women's soccer action at Alvernia.

Alvernia came out of the gate firing, with Abigail Sargent sending a shot in on net in the opening possession. But, King's made the save to prevent the early goal.

The Monarchs and Golden Wolves continued to trade shots in the opening minutes, but neither were able to break through.

In the 20th minute, Alvernia's Gabriella Fontana sent a shot towards the Monarch keeper as rain steadily fell on Alvernia's field. The shot was mishandled by the King's keeper and slipped into net to give Alvernia the 1-0 lead.

Both offenses continued to pepper in shots the remainder of the half, but neither were able to break through as Alvernia held the 1-0 lead into the half.

The Golden Wolves recorded the first shots of the second half, but were unable to build on their lead.

In the 53rd minute of action, King's Leah Sankey gained control of the ball off the right post and sent it across center to Megan Thompson. Thompson quickly redirected the ball to Liz Porto who was crashing off the left post and was able to beat Alvernia' keeper Brynn Bock to tie the game up at 1-1.

Both teams applied pressure late, with Bock making a spectacular diving save off the right post in the 89th minute to keep the Monarchs from going ahead.

Alvernia's Haley Dougherty also had a great look from just past midfield on a free kick in the final 30 seconds. The long ball locked good off the foot, but it sailed just high and off the football uprights to finish the game off in a 1-1 draw.

Fontana led Alvernia with three shots on goal, including her goal in the 20th minute. Bock finished with 10 saves in net for Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves are back in action on Wednesday at Rutgers-Camden.
