Alvernia Drops Two Matches at Cedar Crest Tri-Match.

Allentown, Pa (September 10, 2022) - Moravian University (6-1) defeated Alvernia University (4-2), 3-2 in five sets in the first match and Cedar Crest (1-2) defeated Alvernia 3-0 in the second match of the Cedar Crest Tri-Match. 

In the first match the Golden Wolves took sets two and three, but were unable to hold off the Greyhounds in sets four and five. 

Both teams traded points back and forth in the first set before Moriavian went on a 6-2 run to take the lead at 13-8. With Moravian leading 20-15, the Golden Wolves ripped off a 5-1 run to cut the Greyhound lead to just one, Moravian leading 21-20. 

Moravian would score back to back points to make it 23-20 before Alvernia went on another 5-1 run. Patricia Falar hammered home a kill and Rachel Sipling added two aces to give the Golden Wolves the 25-24 lead late in the first set.  

Moravian would score three straight points to take the first set 27-25. 

With the score knotted at 13 in the second set, the Golden Wolves ripped off an eight point run with kills from Sipling, Remaley, and Allie Evangelista to give the Golden Wolves a 21-13 lead. 

Alvernia would not look back as they finished the second set with four straight points to take it 25-15. 

The third set began with both teams trading points before the Greyhounds jumped ahead to a 9-6 lead. The Golden Wolves responded with a 12-3 run that would put them in the lead by six, leading 18-12. Sipling added two kills during the scoring run while Jamie Pierce, Emma Remaley and Allie Evangelista all had kills. 

Moravian would fight back to cut the lead to 24-22 Alvernia before Remaley hammered home a kill to take the third set 25-22. 

With the fourth set tied at 10, the Greyhounds would go on a 7-1 run to take the lead at 17-11. Natalia Matos added two aces for the Greyhounds and Makenzie Krasley added a kill during the run. 

Alvernia would then go on a 6-1 scoring run to cut the Greyhound lead to just one at 18-17. Sipling scored three kills during the run and Patricia Falar added an ace. 

Moravian would go on a 7-3 run to close out the fourth set and send the match to the fifth set.
Set five would start with Moravian jumping out to a 8-1 lead before Alvernia could pull a couple points back.
With Moravian leading 13-5, the Golden Wolves scored four straight points before Moravian responded with a point off of a kill by Sophie Bauer. The Golden Wolves would score two more points before the Greyhounds took the fifth set 15-11 and the match 3-2. 

The Golden Wolves were led by Rachel Sipling who had 15 kills, Emma Remaley added 12 and Juliana McGlone tallied ten. Patricia Falar led Alvernia in assists with 24 and added three aces. Sipling led in blocks with 17 while Jordan Thompson tallied 16 digs in match one. 

Match two began with Cedar Crest taking a 12-9 lead before the Falcons scored eight straight points to take a 20-12 lead. The Falcons would go on another run to close out the first set 25-12. 

The Golden Wolves jumped out to a 5-1 lead to start the second set with Allie Evangelista, Rachel Sipling and Juliana McGlone all hammering home kills. 

Alvernia would extend its lead to 11-8 with Hailey McDevitt serving an ace and Emma Bowles contributing with a kill. 

The Falcons responded with an 8-3 run to take the lead over the Golden Wolves at 16-14. Both teams would trade points before Cedar Crest extended its lead to 22-20 before scoring three straight points to take the second set 25-20. 

The Golden Wolves jumped out to a 6-3 lead early in the third set after scoring six straight points. Rachel Sipling hammered home four kills during that stretch. 

Cedar Crest would take the lead at 12-8 before Alvernia responded with four straight points on errors by the Falcons to tie the set at 12. 

The Falcons would respond with an 8-1 run to take the lead at 20-13. Ziah Melton added two kills and Ava Graspy tallied one during the run. 

Cedar Crest would finish the third set with a 5-3 run to win the third set and take the match 3-0. 

Patricia Falar led the Golden Wolves with 11 assists while Abigail McGinley led Alvernia in digs with 14. 

The Golden Wolves are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Stevenson to take on the Mustangs at 7:00 PM.
