Golden Wolves Open MAC Commonwealth Play With 3-0 Over Eastern

St. Davids, Pa (September 17, 2022) - Makenzie Smeigh scored twice to lead Alvernia University (5-1,1-0) to a 3-0 win over Eastern University (1-5,0-1) in MAC Commonwealth field hockey action Saturday afternoon at Eastern. 

The Golden Wolves struck early in the first quarter when Madison Speece found Smeigh who buried her shot into the back of the goal to give Alvernia the 1-0 lead just six minutes in. 

Alvernia would continue to apply pressure on Eastern, firing five shots on goal in the final five minutes of the first quarter. 

The Golden Wolves struck again when Smeigh found Speece who fired a shot into the bottom corner of the goal to give Alvernia the 2-0 lead heading into halftime. 

A scoreless third quarter was highlighted by the Golden Wolves outshooting the Eagles 7-1 with four of them on target. 

Alvernia extended its lead to 3-0 in the 53rd minute when Speece fired a cross from the right side into Smeigh who tallied her second goal of the contest, with both assists coming from Speece.  

The Golden Wolves would hold strong to close out the game and secure the 3-0 victory to open their MAC Commonwealth schedule with a win. 

Alvernia outshot Eastern 18-3 in the contest with 14 of them being shots on goal. 

Lexi Boettcher got the win in goal for the Golden Wolves with two saves on three shots. 

The Golden Wolves were led by Smeigh with two goals on a team high five shots and added an assist. Speece tallied one goal and two assists with three shots on goal. 

Alvernia is back in action when they host Juniata College on Tuesday, game time scheduled for 7:00 PM.
