Reading, Pa. (Sept. 21, 2022) -Widener University (3-8,1-2) defeated Alvernia University (4-5,1-2) 3-0 in MAC Commonwealth women's volleyball action Wednesday night at Alvernia. 

Alvernia jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first set with kills from Rachel Sipling, Molly Gaffney and Kayleigh Kehler. Patricia Falar added two aces as well. 

Widener responded with a 5-0 run with three kills coming from Lilyanna Martucci to tie the game at seven. 

With the game tied at ten, Widener went on a 10-4 run to take the lead at 20-14. 

The Golden Wolves bounced back with a 5-1 run themselves to cut the lead to 21-19. Allie Evangelista and Sipling added two kills each during the run. 

Widener closed the first set with a 4-1 run to take the first set 25-20. 

Alvernia started the second set with a 6-4 lead with Emma Bowles hammering home two kills and Sipling added two more. 

Widener then ripped off a 15-7 run to take the lead at 19-13 before going on a six point run to close out the second set 25-13. 

The Pride started the third set by jumping out to a 8-3 lead before both teams traded points and Alvernia cut the deficit to four, with Widener up 12-8. 

Widener and Alvernia traded points back and forth with the Pride extending their lead to 18-13 before closing the third set out on a 7-2 run to take the final set 25-15 and win the match 3-0. 

Alvernia was led by Sipling with 11 kills and ten digs. Falar led with 15 assists and Gaffney added 11. 

Alvernia is back in action on Saturday when the Golden Wolves host a tri-match with Delaware Valley University and New Jersey City University. Match times are set for 11:00 AM, 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM.
