Alvernia Wins One and Drops One at Tri-Match

Reading, Pa (Sept. 24, 2022) - Alvernia University (5-6) dropped the first match to Delaware Valley University (6-4) 3-1 and won the second match 3-0 against New Jersey City University (7-5) in a non- conference tri-match Saturday afternoon at Alvernia. 

In the first match of the day Delaware Valley jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first set before the Golden Wolves cut the deficit to 13-10. Rachel Sipling added three kills and Juliana McGlone tallied two. 

The Aggies responded with a 7-2 run to extend the lead to 20-12 before Alvernia responded with an 8-2 scoring run of its own to pull within two, 22-20. McGlone and Jamie Pierce both added kills during the run. 

Delaware Valley would close the first set out on a 3-1 run to take the first set 25-21.

Alvernia responded by taking a 14-5 lead to open the second set with Allie Evangelista adding a kill and Sipling tallied three kills. 

The Aggies fought back to close the gap to 20-16 before the Golden Wolves ripped off five straight points to take the second set 25-16. McGlone tallied three of the final five points for Alvernia. 

The third set started with both teams trading points back and forth before Delaware Valley took a 12-7 lead. The Golden Wolves responded quickly with a 7-2 run that would tie the set at 14. McGlone added two kills and Hailey McDevitt added one as well. 

Delaware Valley ended the third set on an 11-4 run to close out the third set 25-18. 

The Aggies started the fourth set by jumping out to a 15-7 lead. Alvernia responded by getting points back to cut the deficit to 19-15 after a five point run. 

Delaware Valley extended its lead to 23-17 before the Golden Wolves ripped off a seven point run to take the lead 24-23. McGlone accounted for three of the seven points. 

The Aggies would close out the fourth set 28-26 and take the first match by a score of 3-1. 

McGlone led Alvernia in the first match with 16 kills while Sipling added 15. Jordan Thompson tallied 23 digs and Pierce added three blocks. 

The second match started with both Alvernia and New Jersey City trading points before Alvernia took a 14-11 lead midway through the first set. 

The Golden Wolves then went on a 7-1 scoring run with a kill from Sipling and two from Evangelista to increase the lead to 21-12. 

Alvernia would then close out the first set with a 4-2 run with two kills from Evangelista and Abigail McGinley ended the set with an ace to take the first set 25-14. 

The Golden Wolves started the second set by jumping out to a 12-4 lead over the Gothic Knights with McGlone and Sipling tallying kills and Patricia Falar added two aces. 

Alvernia then ripped off a 13-1 scoring run to take the second set by a score of 25-5. Sipling hammered home five kills, Evangelista added two more and Kayleigh Kehler ended the set with a kill. 

The Golden Wolves took an 11-8 lead over New Jersey City early in the third set before the Gothic Knights fought back to cut the lead to just one, 11-10. 

Alvernia then went on another run, this one being a 7-2 run that extended the lead to 18-12 heading with Sipling tallying three straight kills during the run. 

The Golden Wolves closed out New Jersey City with a 7-5 run to win the third set 25-17 en route to a 3-0 victory over the Gothic Knights. 

Alvernia was led by Sipling who had 16 kills and seven digs with Evangelista adding 12 kills with five blocks. 

The Golden Wolves are back in action when they travel to Rosemont College to take on the Ravens on Tuesday. Match time is set for 7:00 PM.
