Reading, Pa. (Sept. 25, 2022) - A converted penalty kick by
Nick Willson in the 47th minute was all Alvernia University (5-1-3) needed to upset #16/21 Montclair State University (6-1-3) on Sunday afternoon in non-conference men's soccer action at Alvernia.
In a game that was delayed an hour and 20 minutes, Montclair State applied pressure from the jump.Â
Following an early save by Evan Solley for Alvernia in the 3rd minute, Montclair State had another look In the 15th minute, when Josiah Crawford fired a shot off at net. But, Willson came crashing in and cleared the ball just as it was about to cross the goal line to keep Montclair off the board.Â
14 minutes later, Crawrford fired another shot on goal and Evan Solley made a spectacular save to send the shot high and keep it a 0-0 contest.
Alvernia's best look of the first half came in the 41st minute when Eli Klinger brought it up the left side and was one-on-one with Montclair's keeper, Boris Del Valle. But, Del Valle made a great save to deny Klinger and send the game to half locked at 0-0.
Coming out of the half, Alvernia was awarded a penalty kick late in the 47th minute for a handball in the box and Willson stepped up to take the shot for the Golden Wolves. Willson sent his shot inside the left post while the keeper dove right to get Alvernia on the board.
Montclair State put the pressure on after Alvernia's penalty kick, but the Golden Wolves held off the Red Hawks.
Montclair State nearly had an equalizing opportunity in the 64th minute with back-to-back shots, but Solley made saves on both to keep Alvernia in front, 1-0.
11 minutes later, Willson again made a spectacular save on the goal line in the 75th minute to keep Montclair State off the board after Solley was driven to the top of the box.
Montclair State kept the pressure coming with Amer Lukovic heading a shot in the 77th minute that Solley cleared with a jumping save to send the ball over the crossbar instead of into net.Â
The Red Hawks outshot Alvernia 9-5 in the final 45 minutes, but Solley and the Golden Wolves held them off for their fifth shutout of the season.
Solley finished the afternoon with seven saves in net for the win.
Alvernia is back in action on Wednesday hosting Cabrini at 7:00 PM.Â
