Late Goal Lifts Alvernia Past Cabrini, 2-1

Reading, Pa. (Sept. 28, 2022) - A goal by Gabe Wunderlich in the 84th minute broke a 1-1 tie to give Alvernia University (6-1-3) the 2-1 edge over Cabrini University (3-4-3) on Wednesday night in non-conference men's soccer action at Alvernia.

Wunderlich had a great look early in the first half, but the Cabrini keeper made the save to keep it locked at 0-0 in the 16th minute

Wunderlich again had a great shot on net that went just high as it ricocheted off the crossbar in the 30th minute.

Alvernia broke through in the 48th minute with Matthew Kerr sending in a long ball up the right sideline to find Ryan Cogill coming in off the right side of the box. Cogill sent a shot in just inside the right post and out of reach of the Cabrini keeper to put Alvernia on the board.

Cabrini evened it up in the 57th minute when Nick LoBiando passed between the legs of an Alvernia defender and found Tyler Tomlin off the right post. Tomlin fired out of the reach of keeper Evan Solley and into the top right corner of the net.

After several great looks, Wunderlich finally broke through after beating two defenders and firing an opposite goal shot with a nearly impossible angle that went from the left sideline to just inside the right post to break the 1-1 tie and put Alvernia up with just under seven minutes to play.

Alvernia nearly extended its lead to 3-1 in the final 30 seconds on a shot by Cogill, but the ball hit the crossbar and bounded down. However, it was not deemed a goal.

The Golden Wolves held the Cavaliers to just one shot in the second half as Alvernia came away with the 2-1 win.

Solley finished the night with three saves.

Alvernia is back in action on Saturday as the Golden Wolves open their MAC Commonwealth schedule on the road at Hood.
