Alvernia Opens MAC Commonwealth Play with 3-1 Win Over Hood

Reading, Pa. (Sept. 7, 2022)- Alvernia University (4-0, 1-0) took down Hood College (2-2, 0-1) 3-1 in MAC Commonwealth women's volleyball action Wednesday night at Alvernia. 

With the win, the Golden Wolves start the season at 4-0 for the first time since the 2002 season. 

The Golden Wolves started the match on fire, jumping out to a 14-3 lead when Rachel Sipling and Kayleigh Kehler both hammered home two kills a piece during the run. Sipling also added two aces during the run. 

Alvernia continued to dominate the first set, stretching its lead to 12 after Sipling added two kills. Kehler added another kill and Abigail McGinley served an ace to extend the Alvernia lead over Hood to 21-9. 

The Golden Wolves closed out the first set after errors from the Blazers and two kills from Sipling helped Alvernia take the set 25-9. 

The second set started with the Golden Wolves jumping to a 6-2 lead early in the set. Juliana McGlone contributed with a kill and Kehler added another kill to her tally. 

Alvernia and Hood traded points back and forth through the middle of the set with Hood cutting the Alvernia lead down to just one, 11-10. 

The Golden Wolves responded when Allie Evangelista hammered down a kill and Sipling added two more along with an ace to inspire Alvernia to rip off a 7-3 run, and extend Alvernia's lead to 18-13

Both teams traded runs back and forth throughout the end of the second set. With the score knotted at 24, Sipling and McGlone both had kills as the Golden Wolves took the second set 28-26. 

The third set began with the Blazers jumping out to a 7-4 lead before the Golden Wolves tied the set at 7-7 after errors by the Blazers. 

The Blazers continued to add to their lead after Caitlin Ambruster put down two kills and Jackie Malitzki added two aces to extend the lead to 19-13. 

Alvernia responded when Emma Ramaley and Hailey McDevitt each hammered down kills to cut the Hood lead to three. 

The Golden Wolves fought back to cut the deficit to one at 24-23 before the Blazers took the third set 25-23. 

Hood opened up the fourth set with an impressive 8-4 run. Hood's Malitzki served two aces during the run and Shane Simms added a kill. 

Alvernia fought back into the set, evening the Blazer lead at 13 after Sipling tallied four kills in eight points to tie the set. 

Alvernia and Hood would trade runs back and forth with Alvernia jumping ahead, leading the Blazers by just one, 21-20, heading into the final points of the set. 

Alvernia's Molly Gaffney and Emma Remaley both had kills in the final four points for the Golden Wolves as they outlasted the Blazers 25-23 in set four to secure the 3-1 win. 

Alvernia was led by Rachel Sipling with 21 kills. Allie Evangelista led the Golden Wolves with 2 blocks and Patricia Falar led the way with 12 assists for Alvernia. Sipling tallied 14 digs and added three aces in the contest. 

Alvernia is back in action Saturday when they travel to Cedar Crest College to take on Moravian and Cedar Crest in a tri match. Matches are scheduled for 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM.
