Alvernia Opens Virginia Duals With Two Wins

Hampton, Va. (Jan. 13, 2023) - Alvernia University Men's Wrestling won its first round bracket on Friday to advance to the championship bracket on Saturday at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Virginia.

Alvernia was placed in the Poquoson River Bracket along with Camden County College and Roanoke College. The Golden Wolves defeated Camden County 49-4, and nearly completed the sweep of Cougars. Camden County was able to secure a late four points with a major decision at 285 lbs.

The Golden Wolves then closed out the first day of competition with a dual against Roanoke College. Alvernia trailed 9-0 after the first two bouts, but the Golden Wolves took five straight bouts to take a 17-9 lead on the Maroons. The Golden Wolves then won two of the final three bouts to take a 24-12 win over the Maroons.

With both wins, Alvernia progresses to the championship bracket on Saturday. Alvernia will join the other winners of their respective Friday brackets. The Golden Wolves are slated to take on Kutztown University first tomorrow. The other side of the bracket includes Glenville State versus Elizabethtown College. Winners of each side with compete for first place on Saturday afternoon.
