Alvernia Falls Short to Morrisville, 3-2

Morrisville, NY (Jan. 2, 2023) - Alvernia University (4-5-2) came up short in a 3-2 loss to SUNY Morrisville (3-9-1) on Monday afternoon in non-conference women's ice hockey action at Morrisville.

Trailing 3-1 entering the third period, Alvernia got within one on a power play goal by Julia Franklin midway through the third period. But, Morrisville was able to keep Alvernia from evening things up at 3-3 as the Mustangs came away with the 3-2 win to open up the second half of the season.

After a scoreless opening 13 minutes to open up the game, the Mustangs got on the board with a goal inside the right post to make it a 1-0 game. They needed less than 90 seconds to make it a 2-0 game following a hard shot in to net from Emma Thompson.

Alvernia had two opportunities in the final minutes of the opening period to get on the board, but were unable to convert.

The Mustangs came out firing to open the second period, peppering Alvernia goalie Julia Beaven with 12 shots in the opening 10 minutes of the period. However, it was Alvernia who lit the lamp next, with Lexi Hooper finding the back of the net off the rebound of an Alex Robertson shot with just over nine minutes to play in the second frame.

Alvernia trailed by just one goal for about six minutes until the Mustangs made it a two goal game, 3-1, again with an unassisted goal by Morrisville's Kendra Johnston with three minutes to play in the period.

The Mustangs continued to fire shots on net in the opening half of the third period, but Alvernia was able to make it a one goal game, 3-2, following a power play goal by Franklin off the rebound of an Olivia Gilida shot.

Alvernia had 12 shot opportunities in the second half of the third period, but the Golden Wolves were unable to find the back of the net as the Mustangs came away with the 3-2 win.

Beaven finished with 39 saves in net for Alvernia. Kathryn Palmer went 11-for-23 on faceoff opportunities to lead Alvernia in the circle.

The Golden Wolves are back in action on Thursday with a 3:30 PM game against Manhattanville College to open up a home series with the Valiants.
