Pittsburgh, Pa (January 28, 2023) - Chatham University (9-11-1, 8-7-1) completed a three goal comeback to defeat Alvernia University (10-6-3, 9-4-1) in overtime, 4-3, in UCHC women's ice hockey action Saturday night at Chatham.
The Golden Wolves opened up the scoring within the first minute of play when Lexi Hooper assisted Abby Reisinger who found the back of the net to give Alvernia a 1-0 lead just 55 second into the game.
Chatham outshot Alvernia 15-12 in the period before the Cougars equalized with one second left in the first period when Ashley Marchant assisted Kaylynn Savoy to tie the game at one heading after 20 minutes of play.
The Golden Wolves took a 2-1 lead in the fifth minute of the second period when Kathryn Palmer fired the puck past the Cougars goalie after an assist by Olivia Gilida to give Alvernia a one goal lead early in the second.
Alvernia extended its lead to two just a minute later when Alex Robertson tallied her name on the score sheet thanks to a Shae Hudec assist to make it 3-1 Golden Wolves.
Chatham fired six shots in the final 15 minutes of the second period but could not find the back of the net as the Golden Wolves took a two goal advantage into the final intermission.
The Cougars pulled one back with under 15 minutes left in regulation when Ariel Garbin assisted Brooke Almond to make it 3-2 Alvernia.
Chatham continued to apply pressure on the Golden Wolves defense before netting the game tying goal in the final minute of the third period to send it to overtime. Jessup Rainey scored for the Cougars and Cameron Carmody provided the assist as the game headed to an extra period.
Chatham did not take long to find the winner when Almond found Ally Nolan who buried the puck into the back of the net just ten seconds into the overtime period to secure the 4-3 comeback victory.
Julia Beaven finished with 31 saves in net for the Golden Wolves.
Alvernia was led by Robertson, Reisinger and Palmer who all had goals, Hooper, Gilida and Hudec tallied the assists. Gilida led with nine total shots and five on target while Julia Franklin fired eight shots with four going on frame.
The Golden Wolves are back in action next Friday when they host Arcadia University at 7:00 PM.
