Alvernia Goes 3-1 at Ursinus Duals

Collegeville, Pa. (Jan. 8, 2023) - Alvernia University went 3-1 at the Ursinus College Manganaro Duals on Saturday. 

The Golden Wolves picked up wins over the United States Merchant Marine Academy, New England College, and McDaniel College. Alvernia dropped a 24-7 decision to the United State Coast Guard Academy. 

Matthew Lackman led Alvernia with a 4-0 day that included two falls and a major decision.

Alvernia vs. USMMA: Alvernia 42, USMMA 9
Alvernia started the day with six points after USMMA forfeited at 125. The Golden Wolves were tied at 9-9 with USMMA after the first four bouts, but Alvernia won the final six of the match - including three falls - to take the 42-9 win.

Alvernia vs. New England College: Alvernia 46, New England College 12
Alvernia picked up an early five points with a 17-2 technical fall by Keito Shaw at 125, but Alvernia was pinned at 133 to give NEC the 6-5 lead. But, Alvernia rattled off seven straight wins, including four pins, to jump out to a 46-6 lead. Alvernia had to forfeit at 285 for the 46-12 final.

Alvernia vs. McDaniel College: Alvernia 31, McDaniel 13
Alvernia led 12-0 early after a decision at 125 for Shaw, a 15-0 tech fall at 133 for Jimmy King, and a 15-3 major decision at 141 for Avery Leonard. The Green Terror picked up six points with a pin at 149, but Alvernia kept its lead comfortable with a 6-1 decision by Robert Lawlor, an 8-0 major decision by Lackman, and a pin in 2:25 for Gavin Hollingsworth. Alvernia gave seven back at 174 and 184, but capped off the match with Palmer Rodenhaber securing a pin in 50 seconds for the 31-13 final.

Alvernia vs. USCGA: USCGA 24, Alvernia 7
Alvernia gave up close decisions in the first five bouts as USCGA went up 15-0. Alvernia got three back with Lackman recording a 7-0 decision, but the match was taken out of reach as USCGA picked up nine more with decisions at 174, 184, and 197. Alvernia picked up four more with an 11-2 major decision by Rodenhaber, but that would not be enough as USCGA came away with the 24-7 win.
