New Britain, Pa (October 12, 2023) - Alvernia University (10-5, 2-2) took down Delaware Valley (9-8, 1-3) in straight sets, 3-0 in a non-conference women's volleyball matchup Thursday night at Delaware Valley.
The Aggies jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the first set but the Golden Wolves responded and grabbed five of the next nine points to make it a 9-5 game. Julianna McGlone tallied two kills during the run and Presley Carnes and Emma Remaley each recorded an assisted block to cut the lead to four.
Alvernia then ripped off a 10-2 scoring run to take a four point, 15-11 lead. Alvernia's Cierra Roberts hammered home four kills during the run, Rachel Sipling added three and McGlone added an ace.
The Aggies bounced back with a few points of their own but the Golden Wolves continued to match the Aggies as Alvernia maintained a two point, 21-19 lead.
Alvenria then tallied four of the final eight points of the set to take the first set 25-23 and fend off a late comeback from the Aggies in set one. McGlone, Roberts and Sipling all hammered home kills during the run with McGlone hammering home the set winning kill thanks to an assist from Jordan Thompson.
Del-Val bounced back and grabbed a quick 3-0 lead to start the second set but the Golden Wolves responded with the next five points after two kills from Remaley and one from McGlone gave Alvernia a 5-3 lead.
The Aggies then scored four straight points but the Golden Wolves continued to match the Aggies and maintained a slight one point lead, 10-9.
Alvernia then recorded another long scoring run, this one an 8-1 scoring run to take an eight point, 18-10 lead. Sipling tallied two kills, Roberts and Carnes added one kill apiece and McGlone and Abigail McGinley both recorded an ace during the scoring run for the Golden Wolves.
The Aggies tallied four of the next five points to make it a five point, 19-14 game, but the Golden Wolves responded by scoring six of the final nine points of the set to secure the 25-17 win in the second set. Sipling added an ace and a kill and Thompson tallied a set sealing ace for the 25th point to give the Golden Wolves a 2-0 lead in the match.
Both the Golden Wolves and the Aggies traded points back and forth to start the third set before Alvernia ripped off an 8-1 scoring run to take a 13-6 lead. Both Roberts and McGlone tallied two kills and Sipling hammered home three during the run for the Golden Wolves.
Del-Val responded by scoring five of the next eight points of the set to cut the lead to five, 16-11 but the Golden Wolves continued to bounce back as they then tallied four straight points thanks to a kill from Kayleigh Kehler and an ace from Sipling to extend the lead to nine and make it a 20-11 game.
The Aggies then tallied three straight points to make it a 20-14 game but Alvernia recorded five of the final eight points of the set and secured the 25-17 win in set three and clinched the 3-0 victory in the match.
Sipling led the Golden Wolves with 14 kills, Roberts was not far behind with 12 kills, Thompson led Alvernia with 23 digs and Patricia Falar recorded a team high 17 assists.
Alvernia is back in action next Wednesday when they travel to Widener to take on the Pride in a MAC Commonwealth matchup at 7:00 PM.
