Alvernia Falls to Widener, 3-0

Chester, Pa (October 18, 2023) - Alvernia University (10-6, 2-3) fell to Widener University (13-7, 2-3) 3-0 in straight sets in a MAC Commonwealth women's volleyball match Wednesday afternoon at Widener. 

The Pride got out to an 8-3 lead early in the first set but the Golden Wolves battled back to cut the deficit to three, 12-9. Rachel Sipling tallied three kills, Cierra Roberts added one and Julianna McGlone hammered home a kill as well. 

The Golden Wolves and the Pride continued to trade points back and forth with Widener maintaining a three point, 18-15 lead. McGlone, Roberts and Sipling again recorded the kills during the scoring run for Alvernia. 

The Pride responded with four straight points to extend their lead to 22-15. 

The Golden Wolves grabbed a point back to halt the scoring run after an error by the Pride, but Widener tallied three of the final four points to secure the set one win, 25-17. 

Alvernia jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second set but the Pride responded to score nine of the next ten points to take a 9-3 lead. 

Alvernia grabbed one back but the Pride kept scoring, taking the next four points to extend the lead to 13-4. 

The Golden Wolves responded by scoring four of the next five points of the set but the Pride continued to tear off long scoring runs, this one an 8-1 scoring run to make it a 22-9 game. 

Alvernia grabbed three of the next five points scored thanks to kills from Roberts and Sipling to make it a 24-12 game but Widener recorded the final kill of the set to take the second set 25-12. 

Alvernia and Widener traded points back and forth to start the third set with the Golden Wolves taking a slight, 7-6 advantage. Olivia Rohrbaugh and McGlone tallied kills and Sipling hammered home four kills. 

The Pride responded with six of the next seven points of the set to grab the 12-8 lead. 

Alvernia bounced back and tallied eight of the next 12 points of the set to cut the deficit to one, 17-16 late in the third set. Emma Remaley recorded two kills, Sipling added two and so did McGlone. 

Widener then responded with eight of the final nine points of the match to take the third set 25-17 and secure the 3-0 victory. 

The Golden Wolves were led by Sipling who tallied 15 kills and four digs, McGlone added seven kills and Patricia Fala added 14 assists. Abigail McGinley tallied 16 digs and added three digs. 

Alvernia is back in action on Tuesday when they host Stevenson in a MAC Commonwealth matchup at 7:00 PM.
