Reading, Pa (October 24, 2023) - Alvernia University (10-7, 2-4) dropped a MAC Commonwealth matchup to Stevenson University (19-6, 5-0) 3-0, in a women's volleyball matchup Tuesday night at Alvernia.
Stevenson took the first set by a score of 25-14, but the Golden Wolves fought hard in the final two sets, dropping the second set 25-21 and the third 25-20.
The Mustangs jumped out to an early 7-3 in the first set and then ripped off seven of the next nine points of the set to take a commanding 14-5 lead.
The Golden Wolves and the Mustangs then split the next eight points in the set before Stevenson recorded a 4-2 run to take a 12 point, 22-10 lead late in the set.
Alvernia tallied four of the next five points after with an ace from Rachel Sipling but the Mustangs recorded the final two points of the set to take the first set by a score of 25-14.
The Golden Wolves bounced back in the second set and jumped out to an early 5-0 lead. Julianna McGlone tallied three aces for Alvernia and both Jamie Pierce and Sipling hammered home kills for the Golden Wolves.
Alvernia stayed in the lead even after Stevenson cut the lead to two, 6-4, but Alvernia kept scoring points as they held a four point, 10-6 lead.
The Mustangs did not stay down for very long as they responded with nine of the next ten points to grab the 15-11 lead.
Alvernia and Stevenson traded points back and forth before the Golden Wolves tallied three straight to make it a one point game, 18-17. McGlone tallied two kills and Sipling added an ace during the run.
The Mustangs bounced back by recording seven of the final 11 points of the set to take the second set 25-21 and took a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Golden Wolves got out to another 4-0 early lead at the start of the third set but Stevenson bounced back and cut the lead to one, 5-4.
Both teams traded points back and forth as the Mustangs tied the set up at eight.
The Mustangs grabbed two quick points to take a 10-8 lead but the Golden Wolves responded with a 9-3 scoring run to take a four point, 17-13 advantage.
Stevenson grabbed two more quick points again but Alvernia matched one of those to keep the lead at three, 18-15.
That would be the last lead the Golden Wolves held as the Mustangs rattled off ten of the final 12 points of the set to take the third set 25-20 and secure the 3-0 sweep.
Sipling led the Golden Wolves with nine kills and tallied a team high ten digs. McGlone led in aces with four and tallied six kills. Hailey McDevitt tallied 12 assists for Alvernia and Patricia Falar recorded eight digs and seven assists.
The Golden Wolves are back in action on Thursday when they travel to Penn State Berks to take on the Lions at 6:00 PM.
