Zeke Zambrano netted a goal and added an assist to lead Alvernia University (7-5-1, 3-0) to a 2-1 victory over York College (4-5-3, 1-2) in a MAC Commonwealth men's soccer matchup Friday night at Alvernia.
The Golden Wolves 2-1 victory kicks off Homecoming and Family Weekend at Alvernia.
The Alvernia offense tested the Spartan defense early in the first half with Gabe Wunderlich firing a shot that hit the woodwork, Nick Willson had a shot saved and Justin Fetrow and Justin Poles both fired shots wide.
Alvernia would send five more shots at the York goal in the first half but were unable to find the back of the net. Austin Chambers and Matt Knowles both sent shots wide, Willson fired a shot high and Wunderlich sent two at the Spartan goal but both went off target as the Golden Wolves and the Spartans went into the half locked at zero.
The Golden Wolves outshot the Spartans 10-2 in the first half but Alvernia only sent one shot on target.
The Golden Wolves tallied their first goal in the 51st minute of the contest to give Alvernia an one goal advantage. Michael Pierce found Zambrano on a throw-in, Zambrano then made one York defender miss and fired a low screamer into the bottom right corner of the goal to put Alvernia up 1-0.
Alvernia extended its lead to two just under 15 minutes later after the Golden Wolves were awarded a corner kick. Zambrano stepped up to take the corner and whipped a ball into the box that found the head of Wunderlich who headed the ball past the York keeper and into the back of the net to make it a 2-0 game with just over 25 minutes remaining.
The Spartans started to make a push late in the game and fired three shots on goal in the next 20 minutes but all three were saved by Alvernia's Evan Solley to keep the Alvernia lead at two.
The Spartans broke through in the 88th minute of the game when Noah Roche and Brandon Holy assisted Mitchell Seipt to cut the lead in half with just under three minutes to go in the contest.
The Golden Wolves defense held strong in the final three minutes of action and secured the 2-1 victory to kick off Alvernia's Homecoming and Family Weekend.
Solley earned the win in net for Alvernia and tallied four saves.
Zambrano led the Golden Wolves with a goal and an assist, Wunderlich netted a goal and led Alvernia with four total shots. Willson also fired a shot on goal and Eli Klinger and Austin Chambers both fired a shot for Alvernia.
The Golden Wolves are back in action on Wednesday when they travel to cross town rival Albright College to take on the Lions at 7:00 PM.
