Chester, Pa. (Oct. 28, 2023) - Alvernia University's (6-11, 2-5) 2023 season came to a close with a 2-1 loss to Widener University (8-9, 4-3) on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth field hockey action at Widener.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Golden Wolves got on the board just 39 seconds into the first second quarter when Brianna Burkholder scored off a pass from Olivia Hess to give Alvernia the 1-0 lead. 

The Pride tied it up 13 minutes later on a player-up goal and the game remained tied at 1-1 going into the half.

The Pride came out of the half and broke the 1-1 tie just a minute into the third quarter. Alvernia was held without a shot in the third quarter as the game went into the fourth quarter with the Pride leading 2-1.

Kathryn Palmer had Alvernia's only look on goal in the second half early in the fourth quarter, but the attempt was saved. Lexi Boettcher kept Alvernia within one in the final minutes, making two crucial saves, but the Golden Wolves could not get anything going on offense. 

Boettcher finished with six saves in net for Alvernia.

The game marks Alvernia's final contest of the season. The Golden Wolves finished 6-11 overall and 2-5 in MAC Commonwealth play.
