Falcons Take Down Golden Wolves 3-0 in Straight Sets

Reading, Pa (October 4, 2023) - Alvernia University (7-5, 1-2) dropped a MAC Commonwealth women's volleyball matchup to Messiah University (12-5, 2-1) 3-0, Wednesday night at Alvernia. 

Messiah and Alvernia traded points back and forth to start the first set as the set was tied at six early in the match. Jamie Pierce hammered home two kills, Rachel Sipling tallied a kill and Lindsay Ferguson added a kill as well. 

The Falcons then recorded a 5-1 scoring run to take the 11-7 lead. 

The Golden Wolves responded with the next four points to tie the set at 11 with Emma Remaley tallying a kill during the run. 

Messiah responded by scoring six of the next nine points of the set to take a three point, 17-14 advantage. 

Both teams traded points back and forth with Messiah still maintaining a two point, 20-18 lead. 

The Golden Wolves then bounced back by scoring the next four points to swing the lead in their favor, 22-20. Sipling and Julianna McGlone both hammered home kills for the Golden Wolves to force a Messiah timeout late in the set. 

The Falcons came out of the time out and tallied five of the final six points of the set to take the first set 25-23. 

Alvernia jumped out to an early 3-0 lead to start the second set but the Falcons bounced back with three straight points of their own to tie the set at three. 

Messiah and Alvernia traded points back and forth with the Golden Wolves taking a slight, two point lead at 8-6. Hailey McDevitt, Sipling and Pierce all tallied kills during the run. 

The Falcons responded by scoring seven of the next eight points to take the 13-9 lead. 

The Golden Wolves grabbed one back to make it 13-10 but Messiah ripped off another scoring run, this one a 12-2 run to end the second set 25-12 and take a 2-0 lead in the match. 

Alvernia bounced back in the third set and jumped out to an early 10-7 lead thanks to an ace and a kill from Pierce and a kill from Remaley. 

The Falcons then responded with another long scoring run, this one a 9-2 run that put Messiah up four, 16-12 midway through the final set. 

Messiah followed that scoring run up by tallying nine of the final 12 points of the set to take the third set 25-15 and secure the 3-0 sweep. 

Sipling led the Golden Wolves with nine kills and two blocks and Abigail McGinley led with 16 digs. Patricia Falar led with 15 assists and Pierce tallied the lone ace for Alvernia. 

Alvernia is back in action on Sunday when they host Rutgers-Camden at 12:00 PM in the PEC.
