Alvernia Falls to Eastern, 3-0 in Final Home Match of the Season

Reading, Pa (November 1, 2023) - Alvernia University (12-9, 2-5) dropped its final home match of the season to Eastern University (22-3, 6-0) 3-0 in a MAC Commonwealth women's volleyball match Wednesday evening at Alvernia. 

Eastern took all three sets in succession, 25-15, 25-16, 25-19 to secure the 3-0 victory in straight sets. 

The Eagles got out to an early 6-1 lead in the first set but the Golden Wolves grabbed three of the next five to make it an 8-4 game. Rachel Sipling and Emma Remaley both tallied kills for the Golden Wolves. 

Eastern then recorded a 7-2 scoring run that saw the Eagles extend the lead to nine, 15-6. 

Alvernia responded by tallying seven of the next ten points to cut the lead to five, 19-14. Julianna McGlone tallied two aces during the run for the Golden Wolves. 

The Eagles then bounced back with six of the final seven points of the set to take the first set 25-15 and take a 1-0 lead in the match. 

Eastern jumped out to another early lead in the second set, this one a 5-2 lead but back to back points by the Golden Wolves cut the lead to just one, 5-4. 

The teams would trade points back and forth with the Eagles maintaining a three point, 11-8 lead. 

Eastern then tallied a 6-2 run that would extend the lead to seven 17-10. 

A Sipling kill halted the Eagles scoring run momentarily but Eastern responded with six straight points to extend the lead to 12, 23-11. 

The Golden Wolves responded with the next five points to cut the lead to 23-16 but Eastern tallied the final two points of the set to take the second set 25-16 and take a 2-0 lead in the match. 

Alvernia were the ones that got out to an early lead in the third set after scoring four of the first five points to take a 4-1 lead but Eastern bounced back with five of the next seven to tie the game at six. 

Eastern then recorded seven of the next 12 points to grab a two point, 13-11 lead. 

Alvernia and Eastern traded points back and forth with the Eagles maintaining a 16-13 lead but the Eagles then tallied six of the next seven points to push the lead to eight, 22-14. 

The Golden Wolves recorded five of the next seven points to cut the lead to five, 24-19 but the Eagles tallied the final point of the set to take the third set 25-19 and secure the 3-0 sweep. 

The Golden Wolves were led by Sipling with 11 kills, McGlone had four kills and added two aces and Remaley tallied four kills for Alvernia. Abigail McGinley led with nine digs and Patricia Falar tallied a team high 13 assists on the night. 

The Golden Wolves are back in action on Friday when they travel to Gwynedd Mercy to take Griffins at 6:00 PM.
