Glenside, Pa. (Nov. 11, 2023) - A goal in the second period was all Alvernia University (5-1, 3-1) needed as the Golden Wolves edged Arcadia University (5-1, 3-1), 1-0, in UCHC/MAC women's ice hockey action at Arcadia.
Alvernia had the first power play opportunity of the game at the 7:48 mark of the first period. Khenzie Connick and Sydney Bradley fired two quick shots at goal in the early seconds of the power play that were saved. But, those would be the only shots on net during power play opportunity as Arcadia killed it off.
Seven minutes later, the Knights went on a power play of their own. But, Alvernia successfully killed it off to keep the game locked at 0-0, which is where it would remain the remainder of the period.
Arcadia outshot Alvernia 30-8 in the first half, with Alvernia firing in just four shots on goal. But, Alvernia goalie Julia Beaven made 17 saves in the opening 20 minutes to keep the game locked up at 0-0 going into the second period.
Arcadia came out of the intermission and peppered Alvernia with eight shots in the opening five minutes of the period. Beaven and the Alvernia defense held strong to keep the Knights off the board.Â
Alvernia then killed off a power play opportunity midway through the second period and continued to hold off an onslaught of shots by the Knights.
It was then Alvernia that broke through after Sofia King scored on a putback shot off the assist of Alex Robertson and Kathryn Palmer with two and a half minutes to play in the second period.
Alvernia's defense was the difference maker the rest of the way. Following King's goal, Arcadia fired nine shots at Alvernia the rest of the period. Beaven saved three and two more were blocked to keep the Knights off the board.
Alvernia then killed off a penalty in the third period and Beaven made 14 saves in the final 20 minutes to secure the 1-0 shutout win over the Knights.
Beaven finished with 41 saves in net for Alvernia. Amber Steinhilpert finished with six blocks, and Julia Franklin and Robertson each had six faceoff wins.
Alvernia is back in action on Friday at Neumann.Â
