Big Third Quarter Powers Alvernia Past Stockton, 60-56

Galloway, NJ (Nov. 18, 2023) - Alvernia University (4-1) used a 19-0 run in the third quarter to overcome a six-point halftime deficit to defeat Stockton University (2-2), 60-56, in non-conference women's basketball action at Stockton.

Alvernia was held without a basket for the opening 4:18 of the game, but Stockton struggled to get anything going as well as the Osprey took just a 4-0 lead. Alvernia got on the board with 5:42 to play in the opening quarter following a steal by Jordan Karmonick that led to a Meghan Ruth jumper. Alvernia then evened it up at 4-4 on a putback layup by Jennah DeGout as the quarter neared the halfway point.

The Golden Wolves and Osprey traded points over the next three minutes until a 3-pointer by Tamia Wessels with 2:20 on the clock gave Alvernia the 10-8 advantage. The Osprey got one back on a free throw as the Golden Wolves took a 10-9 lead into the second quarter.

Alvernia built its lead up to eight, 19-11, following back-to-back threes by Taliyah Malone with 7:12 to play in the half. But, Alvernia was held to just two points the rest of the half as the Osprey went on a 15-2 run over the next seven minutes to take a 26-21 lead into the half.

The Osprey kept it rolling over the opening three minute of the second half as they built their lead up to 11, 32-21, with just under seven minutes to go in the third quarter. But, the Osprey shooting would go cold from there as Alvernia ended the third quarter on a 19-0 run.

A pair of made free throws by Kayla Williams and a free throw by DeGout got Alvernia back on track and sparked the 19-0 run that would close out the third quarter. A 3-pointer by Malone brought Alvernia within five, 32-27, with 4:46 to play in the third and a Jordyn Ingelido 3-pointer made it a two point game, 32-30, on Alvernia's next possession.

A pair of made free throws by Karmonick tied the game up at 32-32 with 2:31 to play. Williams would then score the final eight points of the quarter to give Alvernia the 40-32 lead going into the final frame.

Alvernia kept it going in the fourth quarter as a layup by Williams followed by a 3-pointer by Wessels made it a 13 point game, 45-32, with 8:19 to play. A jumper with eight minutes to play by the Osprey marked their first points in nine minutes, but Alvernia kept its foot on the gas.

The Golden Wolves took their largest lead of the game, 49-34, on a Malone steal followed by a layup with 5:41 to play.

The Osprey did not go down without a fight though, slowly chipping away over the next five minutes. With 33 seconds to play, Stockton trailed by just four, 58-54. A Wessels free throw made it a five point game, but the Osprey responded with a layup to get within three, 59-56, with 20 seconds to play.

Stockton was forced to foul the Golden Wolves and Karmonick stepped up to the line. She made one of two attempts with 17 seconds to play to make it a four point game, 60-56. But, Malone forced a turnover on Stockton's next possession to seal the 60-56 win for the Golden Wolves.

Williams led Alvernia with an 18 point, 10 rebound double-double, her third double-double through Alvernia's first five games. Malone finished with 14 points and four steals, and Karmonick finished with a team-high five assists and four steals. DeGout finished with seven points and seven rebounds to lead Alvernia's efforts off the bench.

Alvernia has off this week for Thanksgiving and will return to action on Monday, November 27th to host Rutgers-Camden.
