Golden Wolves Take Down Lions in OT, Secure ECAC Championship

Alvernia’s Kraycik Named Tournament MVP

Reading, Pa (November 19, 2023) - Ryan Cogill and Connor Kraycik powered Alvernia University (13-7-1) to a 2-1 overtime victory over Penn State Behrend (12-4-3) to capture the 2023 ECAC men's soccer championship Sunday afternoon at Alvernia.

Alvernia scored two unanswered, including an equalizer from Cogill in the 85th minute. Kraycik then netted the game-winner in the third minute of overtime. Alvernia's defense then held off the Lions in the final 17 minutes of OT as the Golden Wolves picked their first ECAC title since 2015 - when Alvernia defeated PSU Behrend in PKs at Behrend.

A scoreless first half was highlighted by PSU Behrend outshooting the Golden Wolves 5-4 with four going on target but Alvernia keeper Evan Solley saved all three on goal to deny the Lions. Eli Klinger and Firdavs Mamadaliyev both tallied shots that were saved in the first half for the Golden Wolves and Cogill and Nick Willson recorded shots as well.

Five minutes into the second half the Lions had a chance to score when Solley came out of his goal to intercept a through ball played by PSU Behrend. Solley's clearance fell to Behrend's John Ziobro who fired a shot at the empty Alvernia goal but Nate Stoltzfus slid in and blocked the shot to keep the game locked at zero.

Penn State Behrend struck first in the 66th minute of the game when Justin Hockenberger dribbled his way through two Alvernia defenders and played a ball across the goal to Chris Profaca who tapped the ball into the goal to give the Lions a 1-0 advantage with 25 minutes to play.

The Golden Wolves found an equalizer in the 85th minute when Cogill fired a shot that was saved by Behrend's Sam York, but Cogill headed the rebound across the goal and past the diving York to tie the game at one and send the game into overtime.

Alvernia netted the game winner just 2:31 into the overtime period when Cogill drove down the left wing and played a low driven cross into the box, Behrend's York pushed the cross away from goal but it fell to Kraycik who buried it into the back of the net to put the Golden Wolves up 2-1.

The Lions fired four shots at the Alvernia net in the second overtime period but Solley and the Alvernia defense held strong to secure the 2-1 victory and clinch the title.

Solley earned the win in goal for Alvernia and tallied five saves. Solley recorded 11 saves in the ECAC tournament and allowed only three goals. Solley finished the season with a career high 107 saves which is the most by an Alvernia keeper since Ben Diller tallied 108 in 2012.

Kraycik and Cogill led the Golden Wolves with the goals and Cogill added an assist. Wunderlich, Klinger and Nate Stoltzfus all tallied shots on goal for Alvernia.

Cogill and Kraycik both ended the season with 11 goals, the most by any Alvernia player since David McEwen netted 11 in 2011. Cogill also finishes the season with a team high ten assists, which ties a season record for Alvernia and his 32 points is the most since Justin Allegra recorded 33 in 2002.

Alvernia had six players selected to the ECAC All-Tournament Team for their performances during the championships.

The win marks the end of the season for the Golden Wolves, who finished with a 13-7-1 overall record and a 6-1 record in the MAC Commonwealth.
