Alvernia Drops Two to Randolph Macon in Season-Opener

Ashland, Va. (Feb. 26, 2023) - Randolph-Macon College (5-0) swept Alvernia University (0-2) on Sunday afternoon in a non-conference baseball doubleheader as Alvernia opened its 2023 season on the road at RMC.

RMC pitcher Hayden Snelsire pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout in game one of the doubleheader to lead the Yellow Jackets to a 2-0 win over Alvernia. After trailing game two early, Alvernia evened it up at 3-3 in the top of the fifth. But, the Yellow Jackets retook the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth en route to a 6-4 win over Alvernia.

In game one of the doubleheader, Alvernia got out of a bases loaded threat in the bottom of the first as the Yellow Jackets grounded into a 643 double play. But, Randolph Macon got on the board in the bottom of the second on a lead-off home run.

Alvernia recorded its first hit of the game in the top of the fourth as Mike Ramundo reached on an infield single to the pitcher. But, Ramundo would not advance further than first as the inning ended on a foul out to third base.

The Yellow Jackets added one on in the bottom of the fifth on a double to left field. Alvernia did not record another hit until the top of the seventh when Zach Rogacki singled up the middle to lead off the inning. Rogacki advanced to second on the next at-bat, but was caught stealing trying to take third as RMC came away with the 2-0 win in a seven-inning game one.

Jack Cossa went four and a third in the start for Alvernia, striking out one and allowing four hits.

In game two of the afternoon, Randolph Macon jumped out to a 2-0 lead after firing off back-to-back home runs to lead off the bottom of the second. Alvernia got one back in the top of the third as Billy Dougar tripled to right center and scored on a Thomas Faggioni double. Alvernia's one-run deficit did not last long as the Yellow Jackets made it a 3-1 game in the bottom of the third on an RBI single.

Alvernia got back within one, 3-2, in the top of the fourth as Nick Nutile drove in Mike Pulcini on an infield groundout. The Golden Wolves then tied it up at 3-3 in the top of the fifth as Pulcini hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to score Brandon Smith. The tie lasted until the bottom of the sixth when Aaron Lautenschlager hit a two-run home run down the left field line. The Yellow Jackets tacked one on in the bottom of the seventh on a sac fly to make it a 6-3 game.

Alvernia threatened in the top of the ninth with Evan Thomas scoring Nutile on a fielder's choice to make it a 6-4 game with no outs. But, Alvernia's next two batters struck out and RMC picked up the final out on the lead runner at third to come away with the 6-4 win.

Alvernia used nine pitchers in game two, with Chris Sasso getting the start and going three innings with one strikeout for the Golden Wolves. Rogacki finished with two hits to lead Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves are back in action on Wednesday for their home opener against Stockton.
