Wilkes-Barre, Pa. (March 15, 2023) – Alvernia University (5-1) used an eight-goal first quarter and never looked back as the Golden Wolves defeated King's College (1-4) 15-5 on Wednesday evening in non-conference women's lacrosse action at King's.
With the win, Alvernia improves to 5-1 overalls and marks its best six-game start since Alvernia started the season 7-0 in 2011. Alvernia started its 2022 campaign off at 4-2 through six games.
Sherrin Smith opened the scoring for Alvernia with back-to-back goals in the opening 1:19 to give Alvernia the early 2-0 advantage. The Monarchs got one back on their first possession of the game with a goal to make it 2-1 four minutes into the game.
The Golden Wolves retook the two-goal lead on a free position goal from
Natalie Frantz with 9:26 to play in the opening quarter. Frantz's goal marked a 6-0 run through the end of the first quarter for Alvernia as the Golden Wolves took an 8-1 lead into the second frame.
Sophia Ruocco,
Olivia McCambly and
Mackenzie McKinney all scored during the run, and
Haleigh Lackner added two goals.
Alvernia pushed it to a 9-0 run with two more goals in the opening four minutes of the second quarter.
Cailyn Hawley scored Alvernia's first of the quarter, taking the opening draw right down the field and burying it in the back of net. Lackner then made it a 10-1 game on a free position goal.
The Monarchs made it a 10-2 game with a goal off of an Alvernia turnover six minutes into the second quarter.
Both teams then went scoreless until the final 90 seconds of the half when Smith made it an 11-2 game on a man-up goal, and
Meagan Moky capped off the half on man-up goal of her own to make it a 12-2 game and put the running clock on entering the third quarter.
The Monarchs opened the second half scoring on a free position goal, but Alvernia pushed it back to a ten-goal lead on a goal from Lackner off the assist of McKinney. Alvernia continued to roll with another free position goal from Moky to make it 14-3 with eight minutes to play in the third.
The Monarchs scored the final goal of the quarter to make it a 14-4 game in favor of Alvernia with a quarter to play.
Alvernia capped off its scoring for the day on Lackner's fifth of the evening with 7:45 to play.
The Monarchs scored once more on a free position goal in the final two minutes, but Alvernia game away with the 15-5 win.
Kasey Fox and
Kirsten Lake split time in net for Alvernia, making one save.
Lackner led Alvernia with five goals and also finished with seven draw controls and six ground balls. Smith finished with three goals, and Moky finished with two. Frantz had one goal and one assist on the afternoon.
Alvernia is back in action on Saturday at Moravian.
