Alvernia Drops Both Games Against York

Reading, Pa (March 18, 2023) - York College (6-6, 2-0) took game one 3-0 and game two 9-8 to sweep Alvernia University (6-2, 0-2) in a MAC Commonwealth softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Angelica Park. 

The Spartans took an early 2-0 lead in the top half of the second inning when Reagan Wolford scored on an error by the Alvernia right fielder, putting York up 1-0. Emma Keller then ripped an RBI double to left field, scoring Morgan Saurers and extending the Spartan lead to 2-0. 

York tallied one more in the top half of the fourth when Taylor Coon singled through the right side, allowing Keller to score and putting the Spartans up 3-0. 

The Golden Wolves threatened in the final three innings but could not find any runs as York took game one, 3-0. 

Maggie Loomis started for the Golden Wolves and pitched five innings and recorded two strikeouts. 

Alvernia was led by Loomis who went 1-2 with a walk, Paige Paciolla and Julia Burkhardt tallied the other two hits for Alvernia. 

Game two saw no runs scored until York put up a six spot in the top half of the fifth inning. Alyssa Harhigh started it off with an RBI single to left field, Daphney Adams followed that up with a two RBI double to left and Harhigh scored on an error to make it 4-0 Spartans. Emma Wade then stepped up and hit a two run homer to dead center field to give York a six run lead. 

The Golden Wolves responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the fifth when Paciolla ripped an RBI double to left field, scoring Emily Sano and Jaclyn Barbera followed her up with an RBI double as well to score Paciolla and cut the York lead to 6-2. 

York came back and scored two more runs in the top of the sixth when Coon doubled to left to score Sauders and Harhigh singled to score Coon and put the Spartans up 8-2 in the sixth inning. 

The Golden Wolves bounced back with a run in the sixth when Payton LaScala grounded out to the second baseman but was able to drive in Julie Burkhardt and cut the deficit to five. 

York tacked one more on in the top of the seventh when Sauers drove in Walls to make it 9-3 Spartans. 

The Golden Wolves put a rally together in the seventh, scoring five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Janine Crawford started it off with an RBI single through the left side, which drove in Barbera and Devan Hudson followed that up with a two RBI single to left center, scoring Burkhardt and Loomis to make it 9-6 York. 

Alexia Fitzgerald then ripped a two RBI single to center that scored Hudson and Crawford to bring the Golden Wolves within one, 9-8 but they could not find the tying run as York took game two, 9-8 and secured the series sweep.  

Ashlyn Hillanbrand started in the circle for Alvernia, Natalie Berwick and Emma Kropkowski pitched in relief. 

The Golden Wolves were led by Fitzgerald with four hits and two RBIs, Hudson added two RBIs as well and Burkhardt and Barbera both tallied two hits. 

Alvernia is back in action on Wednesday when they host Misericordia for a doubleheader. Game one starts at 3:00 PM.
