Reading, Pa. (March 21, 2023) - Alvernia University (1-4) dropped the opening match of the 2023 spring season by a 5-4 decision to Penn State Abington (5-2)  on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference men's tennis action at Alvernia's Angelica Park.

Abington jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play with the Lions taking wins at #1 and #3 doubles. The duo of Thomas Figurelli and Kevin Angeles picked up an 8-6 win at #2 doubles to give Alvernia one point heading into singles action.

Alvernia evened the match up at 2-2 with a 6-2, 6-2 win from Figurelli at #3 singles, but the Lions retook the lead on a win at #5 singles.

Alvernia picked up another point at #2 singles with Jayden Lewis taking a 7-5, 6-3 win. But the Lions took the final three singles matches to secure the 5-4 win as Alvernia dropped #1, #5, and #6 singles. 

Alvernia is back in action on Thursday as the Golden Wolves host Ursinus.
