Alvernia Drops Two to Immaculata

Immaculata, Pa (March 30, 2023) - Alvernia University (7-7) dropped two games to Immaculata University (7-8) in a non-conference softball doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Immaculata. 

Immacualta just edged Alvernia in game one by a score of 3-2 and took game two by three, 9-6.  

The Golden Wolves struck first in game one in the top half of the third when Brooke Wiester reached on an error and then stole second to advance into scoring position. Maggie Loomis then singled to center to drive Weister in and give Alvernia a 1-0 lead. 

Immaculata responded with a run of its own in the bottom of the third when Bryele Anthony singled to drive in Kaitlyn Carter to tie the game at one after three innings. 

Immaculata took a 3-1 lead in the bottom half of the fourth when Peyton McGowan hit a two run homer to give the Mighty Macs a two run lead. 

The Golden Wolves grabbed one back in the sixth inning when Jaclyn Barbera ripped an RBI single to left field to score Loomis and bring Alvernia within one.

Immaculata held the Golden Wolves scoreless in the top of the seventh to secure the 3-2 victory in game one. 

Loomis started in the circle for the Golden Wolves, striking out three and allowed six hits through six innings. 

Loomis led Alvernia with two of its three hits with one of them being a triple, Barbera tallied the other hit. Both Loomis and Barbera recorded RBIs and Loomis and Weister 

Immaculata got on the board first in game two with a RBI single by Jess Oldham to drive in Anthony and Oldham then scored on an error to put the Mighty Macs up 2-0 after the first inning. 

Immaculata tacked on four more runs in the bottom half of the third when Rylee Martin ripped a two RBI triple to make it 4-0. Anthony followed that up with an RBI single to score Martin and Kristen Karter scored on an error to push the Mighty Mac lead to 6-0. 

The Golden Wolves responded in the next half inning when Meryn Bellacima ripped a two run homer to left to cut the Immaculata lead to 6-2. 

Alvernia tallied two more in the fifth inning when Devan Hudson stole home to cut the lead to three and Barbera grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Alexia Fitzgerald to put the Golden Wolves within two, 6-4. 

Immaculata responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth when they loaded the bases and tallied two runs on an Alvernia error and Carlee Karcher tallied an RBI double to score Sara Rode and put the Mighty Macs up 9-4. 

Alvernia bounced back in the top half of the sixth when Fitzgerald tallied a bases loaded, two RBI single to score Hudson and Paige Paciolla to cut the Immaculata lead to 9-6 but it was not enough as Immaculata held on to secure the series sweep. 

Ashlyn Hillanbrand started in the circle for the Golden Wolves and Natalie Berwick came on in relief. 

Fitzgerald led Alvernia in game two with two RBIs and a run scored, Bellacima tallied a home and two RBIs and Barbera and Julie Burkhardt both tallied two hits. 

Alvernia is back in action on Sunday when they travel to Stevenson to take on the Mustangs in a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader starting at 1:00 PM.
