Albright Takes 17-16 Win over Alvernia in Overtime

Reading, Pa. (April 1, 2023) - Albright College (8-3, 2-0) netted the game-winner just under two minutes into overtime as the Lions edged Alvernia University (6-4, 0-2) 17-16 on Saturday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth women's lacrosse action at Alvernia.

Alvernia led by as much as seven in the first half, but the Lions worked their way back in. Albright got within five heading into the second half, and evened it up at 16-16 with two minutes to play. The game went into overtime as Albright took advantage of an Alvernia turnover to score the game-winner.

Alvernia jumped out to a 2-0 lead with goals from Meagan Moky and Sherrin Smith. The Lions got on the board just under four minutes into action, but Alvernia rattled off two more with goals from Natalie Frantz and Haleigh Lackner. The Golden Wolves and Lions then traded goals to close out the first quarter as Frantz scored her second to give Alvernia the 5-2 lead heading into the second frame.

Frantz scored her third goal in a row to open up the second quarter, and Lackner netted her second to give Alvernia the 7-2 advantage.

After Albright got two back, Alvernia went on a quick 4-0 burst to take an 11-4 lead on the Lions. Olivia McCambly and Lackner each scored two goals during the run.

But, the Lions had the final say of the half as they scored two goals in the final 24 seconds of the half to cut Alvernia's lead to 11-6.

Smith pushed Alvernia's lead back to six, 12-6, to open the second half. But, Albright scored the final four goals of the third quarter to cut Alvernia's lead down to two, 12-10, going into the final 15 minutes of regulation.

Alvernia and the Lions traded goals to open the fourth quarter, with two of Alvernia's goals coming from Moky as Alvernia led 14-12 with 10 minutes to play.

Two more from Moky to mark four goals in eight minutes kept Alvernia ahead 16-13 as the game entered the final seven minutes of regulation.

The Lions stayed in the fight and scored three goals in less than four minutes to even the game up at 16-16.

Moky had a look for Alvernia in the final five seconds, but Albright's goalie was able to make the stop to send the game into overtime.

The Golden Wolves won the opening draw of overtime, but were called for a charge in their offensive zone to give the ball back to the Lions. Albright took it down the field and fired on net to score the game winner and take the 17-16 win.
