Golden Wolves Fall to Spartans, 17-7

Reading, Pa (April 12, 2023) - Alvernia University (6-6, 0-3) fell to #9 York College of Pennsylvania (9-3, 3-0) 17-7, in a MAC Commonwealth women's lacrosse matchup Wednesday afternoon at Alvernia. 

The Spartans built up a 13-2 lead at the half with eight goals in the first quarter and five in the second. The Golden Wolves outscored the Spartans 5-4 in the second half but it was not enough to upset the #9 Spartans. 

York got off to a quick start with three goals in the first four minutes of the game with Sydney Mentzer, Teresa Matthias and Kiersten Blanchard all finding the back of the net to make it 3-0 Spartans. 

The Golden Wolves grabbed one back with just over ten minutes to go in the first quarter when Meagan Moky netted an unassisted goal to make it a 3-1 game. 

The Spartans then scored four straight goals to extend the lead to 7-1 with under five minutes to play in the first stanza. 

Haleigh Lackner assisted Natalie Frantz to bring the Golden Wolves within five with three minutes left in the quarter. 

York College responded with a goal right before the end of the first and scored five goals in the second quarter and held Alvernia scoreless in the quarter to take a commanding 13-2 lead into the half. 

York came out with a goal in the first four minutes of the third quarter when Logan Ward found the back of the net to make it 14-2. 

Lackner responded with an unassisted goal with just under eight minutes left in the quarter to make it 14-3 and Sherrin Smith found the back of the net shortly after to cut the lead to ten, 14-4. 

The Spartans responded with a goal with less than 30 seconds left in the third quarter to make it 15-4 after three quarters of action. 

Moky opened up the fourth stanza with an unassisted goal in the first three minutes to cut the lead back to ten. 

Juliana Silvernale followed that up with an unassisted goal of her own to push the lead back to 11, 16-5 with under ten minutes to go. 

The Golden Wolves then netted two goals in under two minutes with Smith and Lackner both tallying their second goals of the game as Alvernia cut the lead to nine. 

York added one more insurance goal with under two minutes remaining to secure the 17-7 victory. 

Kasey Fox started in goal for the Golden Wolves, tallying five saves and Kirsten Lake also tallied five saves in net for Alvernia. 

Lackner, Moky and Smith led the Golden Wolves with two goals a piece and Lackner added an assist. Frantz, Olivia Malone and Jamie Inacio all caused two turnovers and Kayleigh Kight picked up a team high three ground balls. 

The Golden Wolves are back in action on Saturday when they host Hood for Senior Day at 1:00 PM.
