Big Second Half Powers Alvernia Past Hood, 14-12

Golden Wolves Finish Weather-Delayed Game on 7-1 Run, Lackner Nets Career-High Eight

Reading, Pa. (April 16, 2023) - Alvernia University (7-6, 1-4) scored seven of the final eight goals of the game as the Golden Wolves took a 14-12 win over Hood College (4-9, 1-3) on Sunday afternoon in MAC Commonwealth women's lacrosse action.

The game got started on Saturday afternoon, but was suspended around 4:30 PM following two extended delays for lightning. Alvernia led 5-3 at the time of the suspension.

The Blazers came out of the delay on Sunday and scored the first three goals to take a 6-5 lead. Hood built its lead to 11-7 following a 5-1 run that took the game to the midpoint of the third quarter. But, Alvernia went on a 7-1 run to close out the game and come away with its first conference win of the season, 14-12.

Sherrin Smith got things started for Alvernia on Saturday with a goal in the opening minute to give Alvernia the early 1-0. But, Hood scored the next two goals to make it a 2-1 game with 5:38 to play in the opening frame.

Alvernia got one back on a goal from Haleigh Lackner to even the game up at 2-2, where it would stay the remainder of the quarter.

The game then entered its first lightning delay between quarters and stayed in a delay for an hour and ten minutes.

Play resumed following the delay with the opening draw of the second quarter. Both teams traded possessions until Alvernia broke the 2-2 tie with a free position goal from Meagan Moky.

The Alvernia lead did not last long as Hood evened it back up at 3-3 following a goal of the ensuing draw.

Lackner then scored her second of the game on a free position goal to give Alvernia the 4-3 lead. Just under two minutes later, Lackner picked up a ground ball and Alvernia took the ball down field. Lackner then fired on net to give Alvernia the 5-3 advantage.

But, as teams were heading back to the draw, the game was suspended again for lightning in the area. This time the suspension would hold as the game would not resume until 2:30 PM on Sunday.

Following the resumption of play, the Blazers scored three goals in under three minutes to take a 6-5 lead. A goal from Meagan Moky stopped the run for the Blazers and evened the game up at 6-6 with just under three minutes to play in the second. But, Hood would score the final goal of the half to take a 7-6 lead into the break.

Hood opened up the scoring in the second half with a free position goal to make it an 8-6 game, but Alvernia got back within one on a free position goal from Lackner.

The Blazers then rattled off three goals in four minutes to push their lead to four, 11-7, as the game surpassed the midpoint of the third quarter.

But, back-to-back goals from Lackner in just over a minute of action brought Alvernia within two, 11-9. The first goal came off a free position attempt, while Moky assisted on the second.

Moky then got in on the scoring herself, taking a ball coast to coast to get Alvernia within one, 11-10, with 3:52 to play in the third.

As the game entered the fourth quarter, Alvernia evened it up at 11-11 as Lackner scored off the opening draw.

Lackner then netted her eighth of the game on a free position goal with 12:39 to play to give Alvernia the 12-11 lead. The Golden Wolves did not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.

Goals from Moky and Smith over the next five minutes gave Alvernia some room to work with as Alvernia took a 14-11 lead with just under eight minutes to play.

A man-up free position goal from Hood put an end to Avlernia's scoring run and brought the Blazers back within two, 14-12, but they could never get any closer as Alvernia came away with the 14-12 win.

Lackner finished with a career-high eight goals and was four-for-five on free position attempts. Moky finished with five points off of four goals and an assist. Jamie Inacio had three caused turnovers, and Kayleigh Kight, Mackenzie McKinney and Kasey Fox finished with two ground balls.

Kirsten Lake picked up the win in net for Alvernia with six saves in the final 20 minutes to keep the Blazers off the board at the end.

Alvernia is back in action on Wednesday at Widener.
