Strong First Half Powers Pride Past Alvernia, 13-7

Chester, Pa. (April 19, 2023) - Widener University (10-5, 5-1) outscored Alvernia University (7-7, 1-5) 9-3 in the first half en route to a 13-7 win over the Golden Wolves on Wednesday night in MAC Commonwealth women's lacrosse action at Widener.

Alvernia led 2-0 after two minutes of action, but the Pride closed out the first half on a 9-1 run to jump out to a 9-3 lead going into the second half. Alvernia got within four in the fourth quarter, but the Pride scored the final two goals of the game for the 13-7 win over the Golden Wolves.

Natalie Frantz put Alvernia on the board with a goal off the opening draw of the game, and then Frantz made it a 2-0 game just under a minute and a half later with her second of the game.

The Pride got on the board less than a minute later and evened it up at 2-2 with 9:20 to play. But, Frantz kept things rolling as she scored a free position goal with 8:57 to play in the first quarter to give Alvernia the 3-2 lead.

But, Alvernia would be held scoreless for the rest of the first half while Widener added seven goals onto its lead to take a 9-3 lead into the break.

Sherrin Smith opened the scoring for Alvernia in the second half to bring the Golden Wolves within five, 9-4. But, that would be Alvernia's only goal of the third quarter as the Pride added on two more to take an 11-4 lead into the final frame.

Alvernia opened the fourth quarter with some fire, as the Golden Wolves scored three straight to threaten the Pride and get within four, 11-7, with just over 12 minutes to play. Frantz recorded her fourth of the afternoon to get the run started, and Haleigh Lackner capped it off with back-to-back free position goals.

Both teams then went scoreless for nearly five minutes. The Pride broke the scoreless drought with a goal with just over seven minutes to play to make it a five goal game, 12-7.

Widener tacked on another one with four and a half minutes to play. Alvernia was held to just one shot on goal in the final minutes - a saved attempt by Hailey Miller - as the Pride came away with the 13-6 win.

Kirsten Lake finished with ten saves in net for Alvernia. Frantz finished with four goals, and Lackner finished with four points off of two goals and two assists. Lackner also finished with a team high five draw controls.
