Golden Wolves Split with Red Devils

Carlisle, Pa. (April 13, 2023) - Alvernia University (11-9) split a non-conference doubleheader with Dickinson College (16-10) on Thursday afternoon in softball action at Dickinson.

Alvernia led the Red Devils 7-1 through the top of the fifth before Dicksinon put up six runs in its half of the inning to even the game up at 7-7. The game would go to extra innings where both teams scored a run in the eighth, but Dickinson ultimately walked it off with a single to left field in the bottom of the ninth for the 9-8 win.

Alvernia then took a 4-1 win in game two to split the series.

Dickinson scored the first run of the afternoon in game one on an RBI single to take an early 1-0 lead.

Alvernia was held to just two hits going into the top of the fourth before breaking it open with a five run top of the fourth. Alvernia's first run of the inning came on a Paige Paciolla triple downed the left field line to score Janine Crawford. Alvernia then took the 2-1 lead on a Brooke Weister single to left to score Paciolla, and Alvernia kept it rolling with an Allison Kirschner single to score Devan Hudson and Weister. Alvernia capped off the inning with Maggie Loomis singling up the middle to score Emily Sano and make it a 5-1 game in favor of the Golden Wolves.

The Golden Wolves tacked on two more in the top of the fifth as Hudson scored Weister and Meryn Bellacima on a single to left field.

The Red Devils came storming back in the bottom of the fifth. Two runs scored on an infield single and the third of the inning came in on a double to right field. Dickinson then evened it up on an inside the park homerun to center field to score three runs and make it a 7-7 game.

After a scoreless sixth and seventh inning, the game moved into extras where the inning starts with a runner on second base. Alvernia struck first as Paciolla was moved to third on a sac bunt by Weister, and came around to score on a sac fly by Hudson.

Dickinson matched Alvernia's run in its half of the inning on a single through the left side, and threatened to end the game with another runner in scoring position with one out. But, Alvernia's Natalie Burwick struck out a batter for the second out, and Alvernia's defense grabbed the third out on a rundown on a stolen base attempt to send the game to the ninth.

Alvernia was held hitless in the top of the ninth, sending the game to the bottom of the inning tied at 8-8.  Dickinson's runner on second advanced to third on a wild pitch with one out, and came around to score on a single through the left side to walk it off with a 9-8 win.

Loomis and Sano finished with two hits each, and Hudson finished with three RBIs.

In game two of the afternoon, Alvernia struck first with Crawford driving in Weister on a single to left in the second inning to give Alvernia the early 1-0 lead.

The Red Devils evened it up in the bottom of the third on a bases loaded single to make it a 1-1 game.

Alvernia retook the lead in the top of the fifth. With Loomis on first and Alexia Fitzgerald on third, Loomis was able to steal second while Fitzgerald took off for home to score Alvernia's second run of the game.

The Golden Wolves then tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the sixth as Payton Splain scored during Fitzgerald's at bat, and Tara Tumasz scored on a bases loaded single back to the pitcher by Jacyln Barbera.

Alvernia's defense, behind Ashlyn Hillanbrand in the circle, allowed just one hit the rest of the way as Alvernia secured the 4-1 win.

Hillanbrand got the win in the circle, going the distance and striking out five.

Fitzgerald and Weister finished with two hits each to lead Alvernia.

Alvernia is back in action on Saturday at Messiah.
