Alvernia Splits Series with Messiah

Grantham, Pa (April 16, 2023)  - Alvernia University (12-10, 4-6) split the doubleheader with Messiah University (22-9, 8-2) Sunday afternoon in a MAC Commonwealth softball matchup at Messiah.

The Falcons took game one by a score of 3-1 but the Golden Wolves rallied back and snatched game two in nine innings to even the series.

The Golden Wolves got on the board first in game one thanks to a sacrifice fly to left field by Allison Kirschner that scored Alexia Fitzgerald to make it 1-0 Alvernia in the top of the first.

The Falcons responded in the bottom half of the first inning when Hannah Dyer scored thanks to an RBI double by Elianna Litwin to tie the game at one.

Messiah jumped ahead in the second inning when Rebekah Wiley scored on a groundout by Allie Book to give the Falcons their first lead of the day.

Wiley then drew a walk with the bases loaded in the bottom half of the third inning to force in a run and give the Falcons a two run advantage, 3-1.

Messiah would shut Alvernia down in the final four innings en route to a 3-1 victory in game one.

Maggie Loomis started in the circle for the Golden Wolves and Emma Kropkowski came on in relief and only allowed three hits over 3.2 innings pitched.

Fitzgerald, Loomis, Jaclyn Barbera and Brooke Wiester all tallied hits for Alvernia in game one and Kirschner drove in the only run.

Messiah got ahead early in game two with a first inning home run off the bat of McKenzie Shannon to give the Falcons an early 1-0 lead.

The Falcons would add to the lead in the third inning when Litwin tallied an RBI single to center to score Joy Hedrick and extend the lead to two, 2-0 after three innings.

Both teams went scoreless in the next three innings until the Golden Wolves tied it up in the top half of the seventh inning thanks to a Kirschner two run shot to left field as Alvernia was right back in it late in the game.

Messiah could not plate a run in the bottom half of the seventh as the game headed for extras.

The Falcons threatened in the bottom of the eighth inning. With Wiley on third, Messiah's Brielle Rosario laid down a squeeze bunt right back to the pitcher, Kelsey Racine, who fielded the bunt, flipped it to Barbera to get Wiley at the plate. Rosario then tried to take second and with no infielder available to cover second base, Alvernia's center fielder Wiester rushed in to cover second and took the throw from Barbera and applied the tag to complete the double play and end the inning.

The Golden Wolves used the momentum of the inning ending double play to tally two runs in the top half of the ninth inning. Weister started it off with a walk, Devan Hudson then singled to left and Payton Splain advanced the runners to second and third with a groundout. Kalli Bunnell then singled into the left center gap, scoring both Hudson and Weister to give Alvernia the 4-2 lead.

Racine retired Messiah in order in the bottom of the ninth inning to secure the 4-2 comeback win in extra innings.

Racine gets the win for the Golden Wolves in the circle, allowing only three hits over 5.2 innings pitched.

Kirschner and Bunnell led the Golden Wolves with two RBIs a piece, Hudson led with two hits and a run scored.

The Golden Wolves are back in action on Tuesday when they host Elizabethtown for a non- conference doubleheader at 3:00 PM.
