Golden Wolves Sweep Blue Jays

Reading, Pa. (April 18, 2023) - Alvernia University (14-10) swept Elizabethtown College (7-25) on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference softball action at Alvernia.

Alvernia edged out a 3-1 win in game one before its offensive exploded in game two for a 13-1 win in five innings.

Alvernia struck first in the bottom of the first as Allison Kirschner drove in Jaclyn Barbera with a triple to left field.

The Golden Wolves then doubled up their lead in the bottom of the second as Bunnell drove in Devon Hudson on a triple to left field.

Alvernia left the bases loaded in the bottom of the third, but were able to keep the Blue Jays off the board through the top of the fifth.

Alvernia added an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth as Kirschner doubled to left field to lead off the inning, and came around to score on a Paige Paciolla ground out.

The Blue Jays got one back in the top of the sixth to end Alvernia's shutout bid, but Elizabethtown never threatened any further as Alvernia picked up the 3-1 game one win.

Maggie Loomis got the win in the circle for Alvernia, going four innings and striking out two. Emma Kropkowski picked up the save with two strikeouts in three innings of work.

Kirschner went 3-for-3 at the plate with an RBI and run scored to lead the offense.

Alvernia then used a four-run first inning and eight-run third inning to overpower the Blue Jays in game two for a 13-1 win to secure the sweep.

Elizabethtown jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after the top of the first, but Alvernia then put up 13 unanswered for the five inning win.

Alvernia took advantage of two mistakes in the bottom of the first to get things started. Julie Burkhardt scored on a wild pitch for Alvernia's first run, and Loomis came around to score on an error during Kirschner's at-bat. A double by Payton Splain then drove in two more runs for Alvernia as Brooke Weister and Kirschner scored to give Alvernia the 4-1 lead.

The Golden Wolves then blew things open in the bottom of the third, platting eight runs on six hits and an error by the Blue Jays. Loomis got things started in the inning with an RBI single, and Payton LaScalla drove in two runs on a single up the middle.

Kirschner then kept her bat hot with her second triple of the day to score two more runs and give Alvernia the 9-1 lead, but they were not done with the bottom of the third yet. Splain reached on an error to score Kirschner, and a pinch hit single for Tara Tumasz capped off the inning with the final two runs coming in to score to give Alvernia the 12-1 lead.

Alvernia tacked on more in the fourth with a single from Maddie Matthews scoring Keana Noel to take a 13-1 lead.

The Golden Wolves then retired the side with three ground outs in the top of the fifth to secure the 13-1 win in five innings.

Loomis went 3-for-3 in game two with an RBI, and Kirschner recorded her third extra base hit of the day with a 1-for-2 performance with three RBIs.

Kelsey Racine got the win in the circle for Alvernia, allowing two hits in three innings of work. Natalie Berwick closed out the game, allowing one hit in two innings.

Alvernia is back in action on Thursday hosting Ursinus.
