Golden Wolves Sweep Blazers on Senior Day

Reading, Pa (April 22, 2023) - Alvernia University (18-10, 6-6) took two games from Hood College (9-23, 2-10) and secured the series sweep in a MAC Commonwealth softball doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves walked off game one thanks to a sacrifice fly by Meryn Bellacima to score Payton LaScala and took game two by a score of 8-5 to secure the sweep.

Game one started with Hood threatening in the top half of the first with back to back singles to start the inning. The Blazers then moved runners over and a hit by pitch loaded the bases but Alvernia pitcher Maggie Loomis struckout Hood's Lillian Larsen to get out of the early jam.

Both teams held each other at bay for the next two innings before the Golden Wolves threatened in the home half of the third inning. Alexia Fitzgerald led off the inning with a walk, she then stole second and advanced to third on a groundout by Loomis but back to back strikeouts by the Golden Wolves halted the momentum as the game went into the fourth still scoreless.

Both Hood and Alvernia struggled to record baserunners in the next three innings until the Golden Wolves gained some momentum in the seventh. Loomis retired the side in order in the top half of the seventh, Paige Paciolla then led off the home half with a single to shortstop to give Alvernia a leadoff baserunner. LaScala then pinch ran for Paciolla, she stole second and then advanced to third on a pop up to the second baseman putting her just a sacrifice fly away from scoring the winning run. Bellacima pinch hit and stepped up to the plate and ripped a line drive to center field that was deep enough to score LaScala and walk off game one by a score of 1-0.

Loomis started in the circle for the Golden Wolves and pitched a complete game, allowing zero runs and scattering five hits.

Paciolla led Alvernia in game one with two hits, Devan Hudson tallied one as well and LaScala scored the only run.

Game two started with two scoreless innings by both teams before Hood struck first in the top half of the third with an RBI double off the bat of Jocelyn Pfleiger to give the Blazers their first lead of the day.

The Golden Wolves responded in the home half of the third with a five spot to take a 5-1 lead. Loomis led off the inning with a triple and then scored thanks to a Jaclyn Barbera RBI single. Bellacima reached on an error but was able to drive Barbera in to make it a 2-1 game. Paciolla then tallied a two RBI single up the middle to score Bellacima and Allie Kirschner and then Paciolla came around to score thanks to an RBI double to right center by Hudson to give Alvernia a four run lead

Alvernia tallied another run in the fifth inning when Brooke Weister smoked a RBI triple into the right center gap to score Maddie Matthews and make it a 6-1 ballgame.

The Golden Wolves tacked on two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth when Barbera tallied an RBI single and Bellacima ripped an RBI double to the wall in left center to extend the lead to seven, 8-1.

The Blazers fought back in the top half of the seventh, putting up four runs but it was not enough as the Golden Wolves secured the series sweep.

Emma Kropkowski started in the circle for the Golden Wolves, Kelsey Racine came on in relief for Alvernia and threw 3.2 innings, allowed zero runs, scattered only two hits and is credited with the win.

Barbera, Bellacima and Paciolla all tallied two RBIs for the Golden Wolves in game two and Barbera led with three hits.

Alvernia is back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Eastern to take on the Eagles for a MAC Commonwealth doubleheader starting at 3:00 PM.
