Dutchmen Top Alvernia in MAC Commonwealth Championship

Annville, Pa. (May 13, 2023) - Top-seeded Lebanon Valley College (28-15-1) needed to win just one game on Saturday to secure the MAC Commonwealth Championship, and the Dutchmen did just that with a 4-1 win over #2 Alvernia University (27-18) in game two of the best of three series at Lebanon Valley.

After both teams went hitless through two innings, Alvernia struck first in the top of the third as Thomas Faggioni reached on an infield single and came around to score on a sac fly by Zach Rogacki

Alvernia's lead did not last long as the Dutchmen evened it up at 1-1 on an RBI single to the right gap in the bottom of the third.

The Golden Wolves stranded two runners in the top of the fourth, while the Dutchmen took a 2-1 lead in their half of the fourth. Logan Brewer doubled to lead off the inning and came around to score two at-bats later.

Alvernia stranded a runner in the top of the fifth as well as the top of the sixth as the Golden Wolves could not string together baserunners.

The Dutchmen then added two insurance runs to take a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh, scoring a run on a double to left center and a single to right.

Alvernia stranded another runner in the top of the eighth and stayed within three following the bottom of the eighth.

The Golden Wolves appeared to be threatening in the top of the ninth after their first batter was hit by a pitch and the next walked. Alvernia then had the game-tying run at the plate with no outs, but Lebanon Valley was able to retire the next two and then record a fielder's choice at second for the third and final out of the game.

The 4-1 win for Lebanon Valley marks its second straight MAC Commonwealth title. However, the Dutchmen will be unable to defend their Commonwealth title next season as Lebanon Valley will move to MAC Freedom beginning next academic year.
