Alvernia Falls Short to PSU Behrend in ECAC Championship Series

Reading, Pa. (May 19, 2023) - Alvernia University's (28-20) 2023 season came to a close on Friday afternoon with a loss to Penn State Behrend (22-19) in the decisive game three of the ECAC Championship series at Alvernia.

Alvernia got on the board in the bottom of the first as Joe Glass scored on a wild pitch, but the Lions took the lead, 2-1, in the top of the second. Penn State layed down a squeeze to even it up at 1-1 and took the lead later in the inning on an RBI single.

Alvernia evened the game up at 2-2 in its half of the second, as Glass drove in Jason Kelly on a single to right. The Golden Wolves then took the lead, 3-2, in the bottom of the third as Rogacki led off the inning with a double and scored on a sacrifice hit by Brandon Smith.

Penn State then took the lead for good in the top of the fourth, scoring two runs on a triple with an error that drove in both the baserunner and batter. The Lions then tacked on two more in the fifth on a two-run single to the left gap to take a 6-3 lead.

Alvernia got one back in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single to left by Smith to get within two, 6-4, but Alvernia would not score again as Penn State took the 6-4 win and ECAC title.

Glass, Rogacki, and Smith each finished with two hits to lead Alvernia's offense. On the mound, Shayne Ostrowsky worked an inning in relief and did not allow a hit. That appearance marked Ostrowsky's 25th of the season, tying him with Kevin Becker-Mendito for most appearances in a season.

Alvernia finished 2023 as both the MAC Commonwealth and ECAC runner-up and were 28-20 overall.
