Reading, Pa (September 1, 2023) - Alvernia University (0-1) dropped its season opener to Gettysburg College (1-0) 4-1, in a non-conference field hockey matchup Friday night at Alvernia. 

The Bullets tallied goals in all four quarters to secure the 4-1 victory. 

Gettysburg got on the board in the first ten minutes of the game when Gaby Markunas found the back of the goal thanks to an assist from Brinsley Rushe to make it 1-0 Bullets. 

The Bullets made it 2-0 just 30 seconds into the second quarter when Morgan Cherry assisted Hailey Rhine. 

Alvernia fought back and pulled within one in the final ten minutes of the half when Olivia Hess found the back of the net thanks to a Brianna Burkholder assist to make it a 2-1 game heading into the half. 

Gettysburg made it 3-1 in the final minute of the third quarter when Rhine scored her second goal of the game to make it a two goal difference. 

The Bullets tallied their fourth goal after they were awarded a penalty stroke in the 55th minute. Gettysburg's Katie Regan stepped up and finished the stroke and secured the 4-1 victory. 

Alvernia was led by Hess with the goal and Burkholder with the assist. Madison Speece tallied two shots on target and Gianna DeGregory recorded a defensive save.

Lexi Boettcher and Hannah Wolfe split time in goal for Alvernia and both recorded four saves. 

Alvernia is back in action on Monday when to take on Bryn Mawr. The game will be played at Haverford College under the lights at 7:00 PM.
