Reading, Pa.(Sept. 1, 2023) - Alvernia University (0-1) dropped its 2023 season opener by a 3-0 decision to Montclair State University (1-0) on Friday afternoon at Alvernia in non-conference women's soccer action. 

The Red Hawks controlled possession early and found the back of the net in the eighth minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Golden Wolves were held to just one shot in the first half, and five saves from Brynn Bock in net kept Montclair from adding to its lead as the Red Hawks took a 1-0 lead into the half.

Bock continued to stand strong in net for Alvernia as she was peppered with shots in the early minutes of the second half. But, Montclair broke through again on a shot and goal from Lauren Ernst to give the Red Hawks the 2-0 advantage with just over 16 minutes to play.

Alvernia had a good attempt at net to get within one as Haley Dougherty nearly placed a free kick into net, but the Red Hawks saved the shot to keep Alvernia off the board. Dougherty had another good look a few minutes later, but her attempt went wide off the side of the left post.

The Red Hawks tacked on one more goal in the final minutes for the 3-0 final.

Dougherty finished with two of Alvernia's three shots, and Bock finished with a career-high 16 saves in net.

Alvernia is back in action on Sunday at Catholic University.
