Washington DC (Sept. 3, 2023) - Alvernia University (0-2) could not overcome an early Catholic University (2-0) lead as the Cardinals defeated the Golden Wolves 4-1 on Sunday afternoon in non-conference women's soccer action.

Alvernia avoided a shutout with a goal from Haley Dougherty in the 77th minute. 

The Cardinals jumped out to a 1-0 lead with a goal into the lower left side of the net in the 14th minute. It would be Catholic's only goal of the first half, but the Cardinals held Alvernia to zero shots on goal in the opening 45 minutes as they took a 1-0 lead into the break.

Catholic then struck early in the second half with a goal in the 49th minute to build its lead to 2-0. Catholic then added two goals in just over a minute to take a 4-0 lead late in the 62nd minute.

Macy McDonough put Alvernia first shot on goal in the 77th minute, but it was saved by the Catholic keeper. But, Dougherty picked up the rebound and fired on net to put Alvernia on the board and make it a 4-1 game. However, Alvernia would not get another shot on net in the final 13 minutes as Catholic came away with the 4-1 win.

Brynn Bock finished with seven saves in net for Alvernia.

The Golden Wolves are back in action on Wednesday at Haverford.
