Alvernia Splits at NJCU to Open 2023

New Jersey City, NJ (Sept. 1, 2023) - Alvernia University (1-1) split at the New Jersey City University Tri-Match on Friday afternoon as Alvernia picked up a win against NJCU (0-1) and dropped a four set match to Hunter College (1-0) in non-conference women's volleyball action.

Alvernia started off the season with a 3-0 win over the host Gothic Knights. Alvernia took set one, 25-17, and set two, 25-20, before finishing the match off in straight sets with a 25-19 set win. Alvernia then dropped a four set decision to Hunter.

In set one of match one, Alvernia trailed NJCU, 12-11, as the set neared its midpoint. Alvernia then went on a 7-0 run to take an 18-12 lead on the Knights off the serve of Jordan Thompson. Thompson recorded an ace in the run, and Jamie Pierce and Kayleigh Kehler each recorded a kill.

The Knights got back within three, 20-17, but Alvernia closed off the set on a 5-0 run to take the set 25-17. Kehler served on the run this time around and Cierra Roberts recorded a kill.

The Golden Wolves started off the second set on a 6-0 run on the serve of Patricia Falar, who recorded four aces in the run, to get out to a fast start. Alvernia used that momentum to control the set early on and led 17-7 later in the set. The Gothic Knights held off set point three times, but Alvernia picked up its final point on an NJCU service error to take the 25-20 win.

The Gothic Knights started off the third set stronger, leading the set 15-10 midway through and 19-14 later in the set. But, Alvernia closed out the third set and match with a bang as the Golden Wolves rattled off 11 straight points off the serve of Abigail McGinley. McGinley recorded four aces in the run and Hailey McDevitt had two kills.

Roberts and Kehler finished with a team-high seven kills and Kehler had a team high 22 attacks. Falar and McGinley each finished with five aces, and Falar finished with 13 assists.

In match two of the day against Hunter, Alvernia dropped the first set before getting one back in the second set. But, the Hawks picked up the final two sets for the 3-1 win.

After dropping the first set, Alvernia kept it close in the second set and trailed by just two, 23-21, late in the set. But, a kill from McDevitt got Alvernia within one, 23-22, and an ace by Falar evened things up. A second straight ace from Falar gave Alvernia the 24-23, and a set error on the Hawks secured the 25-23 set win for the Golden Wolves.

After a couple of early ties in set three, Hunter ran away with the set, 25-17 to take a 2-1 match lead.

Alvernia led early in set four, 8-4, but the Hawks worked their way back and took a 15-14 lead off a service error by Alvernia. The Hawks then went on a 7-1 run to push its lead to 21-15. They then went on to take the set, 25-19, and the match, 3-1.

Roberts led Alvernia with 11 kills in the second match and McDevitt finished with 12 digs.

Alvernia is back in action on Tuesday for its home opener against Lancaster Bible.
