Golden Wolves Fall to Chargers in Home Opener

Reading, Pa (September 5, 2023) - Alvernia University (1-2) fell to Lancaster Bible College (2-2) 3-1, in a non-conference women's volleyball matchup Tuesday evening at Alvernia. 

The Golden Wolves took set one 26-24, but the Chargers took sets two, three and four to close out the 3-1 victory. 

Lancaster Bible jumped out to an early 7-4 lead in the first set, but the Golden Wolves battled back to make it 9-8. 

Both teams would trade points back and forth before the Golden Wolves ripped off four straight points to take a 13-11 lead. Julianna McGlone and Rachel Sipling both tallied kills during the run. 

The Chargers responded with a 5-1 run of their own to regain the lead at 16-14. 

Alvernia and Lancaster Bible traded points back and forth before the Chargers took a 22-20 lead with McGlone tallying two kills for the Golden Wolves and Sipling adding another. 

Alvernia then tallied four straight points to take a 24-22 lead late in the first set. The Chargers grabbed two back after errors by the Golden Wolves, but Alvernia responded with a kill from Sipling and an ace by Jamie Pierce to take the first set 26-24. 

The Chargers jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead in the second set with Chloe King and Morgan Fenstermacher tallying kills during the run. 

The Golden Wolves would battle back to cut the deficit to 14-9 midway through the second set. McGlone added two kills for Alvernia and Abigail McGinley tallied an ace. 

The Chargers then recorded a 6-2 run to push the lead to 20-11. Alvernia battled back with back to back points, but the Chargers finished the set on a 5-3 run to close out the second set, 25-16.  

The Golden Wolves responded immediately in the third set, jumping out to an early 11-3 lead. Sipling tallied two kills, McGinley added two aces and Emma Remaley recorded a kill for Alvernia during the run. 

The Chargers would then rip off eight straight points to tie it at 11 midway through the third set. 

The Golden Wolves responded with a 5-2 run of their own, with Sipling, Remaley and Hailey McDevitt all tallying kills to make it 16-13 Alvernia. 

Lancaster Bible bounced back with an 8-2 run of its own, with King recording three kills to make it a 21-18 game. 

Alvernia would score four straight points to take a 22-21 lead, but the Chargers scored four of the final five points to take the third set, 25-23 and a 2-1 lead overall. 

Lancaster Bible ripped off five straight points to start the final set, but the Golden Wolves responded with four straight points of their own with Sipling tallying three aces in a row to make it 5-4. 

The Chargers then recorded an 11-3 scoring run to take a commanding 16-8 lead over the Golden Wolves. 

Alvernia would score five of the next six points to cut the deficit to four, 17-13 but the Chargers scored eight of the final ten points of the set to take the fourth set 25-15 and secure the 3-1 victory. 

McGlone led the Golden Wolves with ten kills, Sipling added eight and Remaley tallied five. Sipling, Pierce and McGlone all tallied three aces on the night and McGinley led the Golden Wolves with 28 digs. 

Alvernia is back in action next Tuesday when they host Bryn Athyn at 7:00 PM in the PEC.
