Golden Wolves Go 1-1 at Marywood Tri-Match

Scranton, Pa (September 16, 2023) - Alvernia University (4-3) finished 1-1 at the Marywood Tri-Match on Saturday in a women's volleyball tri match with Marywood University (3-7) and Keuka College (6-3). 

The Golden Wolves took down Marywood 3-0 in straight sets but fell to Keuka 3-2 in five sets. 

Alvernia started the day against the Pacers where Marywood jumped out to an early 9-4 lead, but the Golden Wolves tallied five of the next six points to pull within one, 10-9. 

Both teams traded points back and forth with Marywood holding a 12-10 lead, the Golden Wolves then ripped off a 7-4 scoring run and grabbed the lead at 17-16. Rachel Sipling tallied two kills, Hailey McDevitt tallied a kill and an ace and Presley Carnes hammered home a kill as well. 

The Pacers then grabbed a 22-20 lead, but Alvernia ripped off the final five points of the set to take the first set 25-22. McDevitt and Sipling hammered home kills and Julianna McGlone recorded an ace to end the set. 

The Golden Wolves then jumped out to a 9-4 lead, but the Pacers game back and pulled within one with Alvernia maintaining a 9-8 lead. 

Both teams traded points back and forth before the Golden Wolves recorded six of the next nine points to extend the lead to 18-13. Sipling tallied two kills, Emma Remaley hammered a kill home and McDevitt tallied an ace during the run. 

Alvernia then closed out the second set by scoring seven of the final 12 points of the set to take the second set 25-19 and take a 2-0 lead in the match. McGlone tallied three kills during the run, Remaley recorded a kill and Lindsay Ferguson also tallied a kill. 

The Golden Wolves started the final set with an 8-1 scoring run to start the set with three aces from Abigail McGinley, two kills from Sipling and Ferguson and Cierra Roberts also recorded kills. 

Marywood and Alvernia would trade points back and forth with Alvernia maintaining a 12-9 lead before ripping off four of the next six points to take a 16-11 advantage. 

Alvernia then finished off the Pacers with a 9-3 run to end the set and take the set 25-14 and sweep the match, 3-0 in straight sets. 

Sipling hammered home a team high ten kills, six aces and four blocks for the Golden Wolves. Patricia Falar tallied 17 assists and McGinley recorded a team high 11 digs. 

Alvernia's second match of the day was against Keuka College. Keuka took an early 6-2 advantage in the first set, but the Golden Wolves responded with six straight points to grab an 8-6 lead.

Both teams traded points back and forth before the Golden Wolves tallied three in a row to take a four point, 14-10 lead. McGlone, Sipling and Ferguson all recorded kills during the run. 

Alvernia then finished the first set by scoring ten of the final 15 points of the set to take set one by a score of 25-18. 

The second set started with Keuka jumping out to a quick 7-2 lead but the Golden Wolves grabbed two back to make it 7-4. 

Keuka then went on a 10-2 scoring run to extend its lead to 17-6. 

Both teams would trade points back and forth, but Keuka then scored six of the final 12 points to take the second set 25-15 and even the match at one apiece. 

The Golden Wolves responded by starting the third set with a 7-1 run with Ferguson recording a kill and McGlone tallied an ace. 

Keuka then responded with six straight points to tie the set at seven. 

Keuka and Alvernia traded points back and forth before the Golden Wolves edged ahead to a four point lead, 15-11. 

Keuka responded immediately with a 10-2 scoring run to swing the score to 19-15 in favor of the Wolves. 

Alvernia responded with seven of the next 11 points to pull within one, 23-22, but Keuka tallied the final two points of the set to take the third set 25-22 and take a 2-1 lead in the match. 

The Golden Wolves took an 8-3 lead early in the fourth set with Sipling hammering home three kills, Roberts tallied two and Falar recorded one as well. 

The Golden Wolves continued to extend their lead to 12-6 with Ferguson and McGlone tallying kills. 

Both teams would trade points back and forth with the Golden Wolves pushing their lead to 19-13 late in the fourth set. 

Alvernia then scored six of the final 11 points to take the fourth set 25-18 and even the match up at two. Roberts and McGlone both tallied kills during the final five points of the set. 

The deciding set started out with both teams ripping off scoring runs with Alvernia jumping out to a 3-0 lead, but Keuka came back with four straight points to take a 4-3 lead. 

Both teams traded points back and forth before Alvernia jumped out to a 10-7 advantage midway through the fifth set. Sipling recorded a kill, mcGlone hammered home two and Jamie Pierce tallied a kill as well. 

Alvernia stretched its lead to 12-9, but Keuka responded by scoring six of the final seven points to take the deciding set 15-13 and take the match 3-2. 

Sipling led the Golden Wolves in the second match with 21 kills, McGlone tallied 14 and Roberts added seven. Jordan Thompson led Alvernia with 24 digs, Falar added 32 assists and Pierce recorded a team high four blocks. 

Alvernia is back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Hood to take on the Blazers at 7:00 PM.
