Alvernia Takes Down Hood, 3-0 in MAC Commonwealth Opener

BOX SCORE Frederick, Md. (September 20, 2023) - Alvernia University (5-3, 1-0) swept Hood College (4-8, 0-1) 3-0 in straight sets in a MAC Commonwealth women's volleyball matchup Wednesday night at Hood. 

The Golden Wolves took down the Blazers 25-18 in the first set, 25-21 in the second and closed the match out with a 25-19 victory in the third set to secure the 3-0 victory in Alvernia's MAC Commonwealth opener. 

The Golden Wolves got out to an early 7-5 lead thanks to kills by Rachel Sipling, Julianna McGlone and Patrica Falar, but the Blazers ripped off three straight points to swing the lead to 8-7 Hood. 

Alvernia responded by scoring six of the next eight points to take a 13-10 lead. Sipling recorded three kills during the run and Lindsay Ferguson and Falar both added kills. 

Both teams would trade points back and forth until the Blazers went on a 5-2 scoring run to even the set at 18. 

Alvernia responded immediately with seven straight points to close out the first set by a score of 28-18. 

Both Alvernia and Hood traded points to start the second set with the Blazers taking a slight 12-10 advantage over the Golden Wolves but Alvernia responded with three straight points to take a 13-12 lead. 

Hood then tallied five of the next seven points to grab a 17-15 lead late in the second set. 

The Golden Wolves came back and posted a 10-4 scoring run to end the set and take the second set 25-21. Sipling hammered home the final two kills for the Golden Wolves, McGlone added a kill and an ace and Abigail McGinley tallied an ace as well. 

Hood came out firing in the final set, jumping out to an early 7-1 lead, but Alvernia responded with six straight points to tie the set at seven. Jamie Pierce hammered home a kill and Mcginley recorded an ace during the scoring run. 

The Blazers and Golden Wolves battled back and forth for the next 12 points with Hood edging a slight advantage, holding a 14-12 lead. 

The Golden Wolves responded by ripping off yet another scoring run, this one being seven straight points to swing the lead into Alvernia's favor by a score of 19-14. McGlone recorded four aces during the run. 

The Blazers grabbed two quick points back to make it 19-16, but Alvernia tallied six of the final nine points of the set to grab the 25-19 victory in the third set and secure the 3-0 victory. Pierce tallied a kill in the final run and Sipling hammered home the match winning kill after an assist from McGinley. 

Sipling led the Golden Wolves with 13 kills, McGlone added five and Pierce added three. McGinley led with six aces, and 12 digs, Falar recorded a team high 24 assists and Sipling and Pierce tallied three blocks each. 

Alvernia is back in action on Friday when they travel to Goucher to take on the Gophers at 7:00 PM.
