Alvernia Rolls Past Goucher, 3-0

Baltimore, Md. (Sept. 22, 2023) - Alvernia University (6-3) picked up its second 3-0 win of the week as the Golden Wolves defeated Goucher College (2-8) on Friday night in non-conference women's volleyball action at Goucher.

Alvernia took the first set 25-16, and the second set 25-21. Alvernia then capped off the match with a 25-16 third set.

Alvernia trailed 7-2 early in the first set before firing off three straight points to get within two, 7-5. Goucher got one point back to make it an 8-5 set in favor of the Gophers. But, Alvernia then rattled off eight straight to go up 13-8. Rachel Sipling led the 8-0 run on the serve with two aces and a kill. Alvernia extended its lead to 17-10 on a Goucher attack error, and led 22-13 later in the match on back-to-back errors by Goucher. The Gophers held off set point twice, but Alvernia sealed the first set, 25-16, on a service error by Goucher.

The Golden Wolves got out to a quicker start in set two, leading 7-4 following a kill by Sipling and an attack error by Goucher. The set was back-and-forth for the next few points until Alvernia again went on a run off the serve of Sipling. Sipling recorded an ace and kill and Julianna McGlone added a second kill as Alvernia took an 18-10 lead. Goucher fought back and got within two, 22-20, but Alvernia kept the pressure to close out the set as Sipling recorded a kill off the set of Patricia Falar for the 25-21 set two win.

Alvernia jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the third set. Alvernia led 12-6 following a kill from Emma Remaley, but Goucher got within three, 12-9, on a quick 3-0 run. Alvernia responded with a 9-2 run of its own to quickly push the lead to 21-11. Sipling recorded three kills during the run, and Lindsey Ferguson and McGline each recorded another. Alvernia then closed off the set and the match as Olivia Rohrbaugh and Jamie Pierce recorded a block for Alvernia's 24th point, and a service ace by Pierce gave Alvernia match point, 25-16.

Sipling led Alvernia with 18 kills on 48 attacks with just three errors. She also had 16 digs and three aces. Abigail McGliney had a team-high 19 digs, and Falar finished with 33 assists.

Alvernia is back in action on Tuesday at York College.
